A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

To be a supportive but at the same time critical tutor is important, as not only to accompany students general well being, but also to ensure they are learning efficiently and effectively in excell in any subject. Student's want to improve, but also enjoy and have fun while learning, so I think a tutoring experience that accomodates that is the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment in which the student feels comfortable asking questions and encouraging them to work hard and commit to learning. Big class settings can often see some students fall away in the mass, which means the one on one tutoring gives them the opportunity to be the sole focus, and ask the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student interested in whatever subject they are learning. The best way to learn anything is to show genuine interest in that topic. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is without a doubt making them love the material. From personal experience I know that I do much better in subjects that I like, and teachers and tutors have perhaps the biggest impact on how much students like the material. Being a recent high school graduate and current university student I understand…

Inside NichollsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia focused on simplifying linear equations and practiced converting fractions to decimals using real-world word problems.

For Year 9, Ethan worked through solving simultaneous equations with both substitution and elimination methods, reinforcing these skills with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia covered compound interest calculations and reviewed the application of Pythagoras' Theorem in geometry questions, using step-by-step diagrams to aid understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student regularly relied on a calculator for basic times tables, as noted: "needs to work on fundamentals—times tables for year 9—the more he can guestimate the answer the more likely he can eliminate any extreme errors."

In a Year 7 algebra session, skipping written steps led to confusion when isolating unknowns, resulting in extra time spent correcting sign errors.

At primary level, several students avoided completing homework or forgot materials needed for revision, which slowed progress and left gaps before new topics.

One senior student's tendency to overthink subtraction meant test time was wasted second-guessing instead of answering.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nicholls recently noticed a Year 9 student finally cracked simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination—something they'd avoided before because it felt overwhelming.

In a Year 7 maths session, another student began to independently spot when subtraction was needed in word problems, catching their own mistakes instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students who used to freeze during reading now volunteers to read aloud and even pauses to sound out tricky words without prompting. At the end of her last lesson, she confidently finished a whole page by herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Maham is great and Sabrina enjoys the maths tutoring. Maham is patient, soft spoken and always on time.

Blair has only had three tutoring sessions so far but is really enjoying them. He and Suraj seem to be working well together. With each session they seem to be becoming more confident with each other.

Michael has made a huge difference already, and we are very happy with his work so far. Mia is listening to him and there is some great mutual respect happening. I love that when mia doesn't know something he ensures to not make her feel silly. It has helped her confidence Immensely.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gungahlin Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gold Creek School.
