A tutor should have the ability to share information in a way that others will learn, grasp the concepts, understand the input. A tutor should be able to know strengths and weakness of a student. A extra paper work is required by tutor for better performance of a student. A regular assessment of student to enhance his performance. A tutor should…

I think communication with your student is important. As a tutor, you can not force a student to do things your way, so it's important to be able to compromise and help them with what they think is important so they don't lose interest in a subject, whether it is a struggling student or one that wants to excel. By involving them in the process you…

Improving a student's results is obviously the goal for tutoring, but improving a student's confidence in themselves and their abilities is just as important. Watching a student start to believe in themselves and take the reins is a marker of success. I work well with kids and teens, as I am enthusiastic and make an effort to get to know them and…

To ensure that the student understands everything fully. That is what a tutor is for, and no concept or idea should be left unturned. Everything should be thoroughly explored until full understanding has been achieved. I am an extremely patient person who will spend as long as required to explain a concept or idea. I also use down-to-earth…

A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand their student. All students have different strengths and weaknesses, and it is the responsibility of the tutor to understand their student as an individual in order to tutor in a way that is the most effective for a student to improve. For example, one of my students in the past learnt best…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in themselves and their understanding of the subject. I find that from confidence can come a wealth of improvement in performance, as a student's willingness to take risks and belief themselves can go a long way. In terms of specific strengths, I…

I believe it is essential to understand your student, and adapt your teaching and communication style to benefit their learning style, age, personality, and knowledge. It is important for a tutor to really believe in their student, and do all they can to help them excel. I believe I have excellent communication skills as I am able to adapt to each…

Provide support to students in both the academic and mental difficulties they might be going through. Often as a tutor you must recognise that students who get tutoring need further help than what is being given and may have academic insecurity, so it is our role to help them improve on this and gain confidence in their learning, with hopes that…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is boost a students confidence and connect with them. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students develop critical thinking skills. It’s not just about giving them the right answers, but guiding them to ask the right questions, break down problems, and reason through solutions on their own. This way, they become independent learners who can tackle new challenges with…

Inside NichollsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia focused on simplifying linear equations and practiced converting fractions to decimals using real-world word problems.

For Year 9, Ethan worked through solving simultaneous equations with both substitution and elimination methods, reinforcing these skills with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia covered compound interest calculations and reviewed the application of Pythagoras' Theorem in geometry questions, using step-by-step diagrams to aid understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student regularly relied on a calculator for basic times tables, as noted: "needs to work on fundamentals—times tables for year 9—the more he can guestimate the answer the more likely he can eliminate any extreme errors."

In a Year 7 algebra session, skipping written steps led to confusion when isolating unknowns, resulting in extra time spent correcting sign errors.

At primary level, several students avoided completing homework or forgot materials needed for revision, which slowed progress and left gaps before new topics.

One senior student's tendency to overthink subtraction meant test time was wasted second-guessing instead of answering.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nicholls recently noticed a Year 9 student finally cracked simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination—something they'd avoided before because it felt overwhelming.

In a Year 7 maths session, another student began to independently spot when subtraction was needed in word problems, catching their own mistakes instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students who used to freeze during reading now volunteers to read aloud and even pauses to sound out tricky words without prompting. At the end of her last lesson, she confidently finished a whole page by herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with the tutor sessions to date. Kellie and Luke are working well together and we believe this has already been reflected in Luke's recent exams.

Thanks Josh has already increased test results from barely passing to 88%. Exams in the next week will be another challenge. Looking forward to seeing Harry tonight. Thanks regards Sharon.

I'm really pleased with Kamran's work with Tyler, he has shown a noticeable improvement in his attitude to maths and his effort and understanding. Tyler is really enjoying working with Kamran , his style of treating him as an equal in his learning journey has been of real benefit.
