The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be consistent, positive and a guidance for the student throughout their studies. It is through these attributes that a student can truly benefit from the teachings and have a willingness to learn and understand the concepts taught by the tutor. I am passionate about the subjects I teach, I…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is targeting a student's goal in a subject, whether that be just passing or scoring 100%, and teaching them at that level, whilst providing that extra push to potentially help them succeed above these goals. In doing so, I believe this allows students to engage more with the work and see strong…

Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

A tutor should have empathy, only by being able to put yourself in somebody else's shoes can you understand the real problem and offer a solution. By building a strong foundation a tutor can help student realize his/her true potential. I think I know my subject well and importantly know how to make it look simple for my…

I believe that one of the most effective parts of tutoring is the repetition of concepts from both the school and the tutor, which helps drill in the point. It's easy to gloss over something if it's only taught once (i.e. just schoolwork), but if it crops up again and again (i.e. from schoolwork + tutoring + homework), then the concept sticks much…

I think one of the most important traits a tutor needs is patience. It is not helpful to make the student feel stupid or inadequate and of course each student is unique and learns at a different pace. Patience is pivotal to make the student feel like it is a safe space to ask questions, be willing to rephrase concepts until they understand and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them confidence. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence that they have the ability to learn. To ensure a student can be tutored effectively, they have to feel open about discussing topics and concepts they do not understand well which can be daunting. Local Reviews

My daughter Jasmine has been tutored by Thomas Ban in maths for the past few years. She recently was accepted into the gifted and talented class for year 7 at Stella Maris and also received an "Outstanding" grade (highest grade possible) for Maths this year. We just wanted to thank Thomas Ban for the wonderful work he has done with Jasmine this year. We feel that she has received these grades due to Thomas tutoring. He has challenged and pushed her to work harder and improve her maths. He is also extremely professional and courteous.

Inside North NarrabeenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sarah practised adding and subtracting fractions and reviewed prime factorization through targeted worksheet exercises.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on solving systems of two equations with two variables as well as proving formulas for the angles in polygons, working through example problems step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia explored how changing constants affects linear graphs using graphing software and also determined equations for arbitrary lines by analyzing different scenarios together.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Biology left a major assignment until the day before it was due, leading to "a very large amount of work to do the day before," which made the task far more stressful and rushed than necessary.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student in Mathematics often skipped writing out steps when solving algebraic equations—most errors come from working too fast and not double checking each step, as noted—which caused avoidable mistakes with units and signs.

In English, a Year 10 student let an important draft deadline creep up unnoticed, nearly missing the submission window.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in North Narrabeen recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on algebra equations now recognising steps independently without being prompted, especially when isolating variables—something she struggled with last term.

Another high school student was proud of her most recent maths exam result: after weeks of targeted practice, she lifted her score by over 40% compared to her last test.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often hesitated before reading clocks is now confidently telling the time on an analog clock independently and even explains how she figures it out.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mona Vale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Narrabeen Sports High School.
