In the short term, help them get over the current difficulties they're facing. But in the long term, help them develop the skills to deal with future difficulties without a tutor being needed. I am very passionate about mathematics. I have a methodically logical mind, but also a lot of appreciation for the beauty of the subject, which I believe I…

It is important that tutors take measures to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses within a subject and to ensure their advice is suited to these capabilities. Tutoring should directly meet a student's needs, rather than implementing a one size fits all approach. A tutor should also supply a student with resources and advice that will…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is tailor their approach to the student’s needs. Their learning method, their stuggles and strengths. A tutor should help develop the student's study skills, and be able to provide specific and constructive feedback. Patience and flexibility are key qualities to have because it will empower…

Being Non-judgmental with a desire to help; does not make assumptions about students; treats all students as individuals who want to learn and have the ability to learn no matter what their personal background or circumstances are. I believe a tutor’s most important role is to be patient and truly understand how each student learns. By breaking down concepts clearly, sharing practical strategies, and creating a supportive and encouraging environment, a tutor can help students gain confidence, retain knowledge, and genuinely enjoy the process of learning. The single most important aspect for a tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I believe…

To listen, and understand why a student isn't understanding a topic. Everyone is different, and tutors need to be able to adapt to everyone's own needs, and be able to find creative ways to teach them in ways they will actually learn. It is also important to ensure students go back to previous topics after learning them, to ensure long-term…

A tutor needs to analyse and understand the way a specific student learns, and cater for that. While a tutors ability to explain a problem is important, I believe the ability to explain a problem in a variety of different ways, while also showing a student that needing help with school is completely normal, is of upmost importance. I understand…

Inside North ShoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Phoebe focused on revision of indices ahead of an upcoming exam, working through targeted practice questions.

Year 10 student Isaac tackled both Pythagoras' Theorem and introductory trigonometry concepts, then moved into quadratic equations with a focus on factorising techniques.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Georgia explored differentiation using the chain rule and also practised applying derivatives to power functions, strengthening her calculus fundamentals through worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student often avoided showing working when factorising quadratics—"she solved it mentally but missed errors with signs," the tutor noted. This habit made mistakes harder to catch and fix before moving on.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student preparing for trigonometry and significant figures relied heavily on notes rather than committing key formulas to memory, which slowed problem-solving during timed drills.

In primary maths, a Year 4 learner sometimes guessed division answers instead of writing out steps; this led to confusion when reviewing tricky questions later in the lesson.

Recent Achievements

A North Shore tutor recently noticed a big shift in Phoebe, a high school student who used to struggle with indices and surds—she now tackles those problems confidently without needing extra sessions.

Another win from the notes: after regular work on exponential growth and compound interest, Phoebe has started clarifying her own misunderstandings instead of waiting for help.

At the primary level, one student who was hesitant to engage is now showing much more focus during lessons and sticks with practice questions even when they get tricky, something that rarely happened before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corio Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northern Bay P-12 College-Tallis Street P-8 Campus.
