The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. That requires building a students skills to not only understand the techniques which can be used but also how to most effectively apply them. The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence with whatever it is they are doing. Not every single student is going to be able to achieve a 99 ATAR or 100% on all their tests, but what is most important is that they feel confident that they did their very best and performed to their fullest potential. If a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are inspire and impart. 1. To not get in the way and yet the child will make the correct decisions at the time of tutoring and onwards after tutoring. Amongst other things, being a figure of support for students is very important as a tutor. I consider that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make them feel confident going to class every day and not feel that they are behind their class as well as look forward to an exam to share all of their knowledge with the markers rather than dread an exam, also reducing their stress and encouraging them to enjoy school.…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

Inside North SydneyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Olivia focused on networks and diagrams as well as advanced trigonometry, revising concepts using assignment questions and targeted practice.

Year 10 student James worked through exponential and other non-linear graphing alongside financial mathematics revision, strengthening understanding with textbook exercises and real-life examples.

For Year 6, Emma tackled properties of quadrilaterals and triangles—including congruency tests—while also reviewing composite area questions and coordinate plane skills to prepare for her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student was hesitant to attempt problem-solving questions involving algebra, often deferring to decimals—her tutor noted she "seemed slightly hesitant" and avoided the unfamiliar, which limited growth in new techniques.

In Year 8, a student's written work on nets was sometimes unclear due to repeated shapes in different orientations; this made it hard for both teacher and student to spot errors efficiently.

A Year 11 lesson revealed revision time focused mostly on easier material, so weak areas like graphing and congruency proofs weren't reinforced before tests.

Missed opportunities for feedback also slowed progress in linear work (Year 10).

Recent Achievements

One North Sydney tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to explain her thinking; now she's actively talking through each geometry problem, showing much more willingness to share how she arrives at answers.

Another high school student surprised himself by managing all the extension questions in a challenging revision session—he even asked for extra practice on areas he'd once avoided.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to skip writing out steps is now consistently setting out her working for every question, making it easier for her to spot and fix mistakes herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very impressed with Abitha & her approach in tutoring Capri. Already Capri is showing signs of more confidence & less anxiety with her maths.

I'd like to highly recommend Dwight to any other families. His kind and patient demeanor translate into a great tutor. He's been very helpful. My daughter just got her results from her Algebra test which Dwight had to catch her up on as that's one of the topics she missed. She got 93%. Great result and proof of Dwights great tutoring.

Joshua feels comfortable with Linh so far, which is fantastic. His teaching skills are impressive! Very happy so far...
