A tutor should encourage them, celebrate their progress, and show them that challenges can be overcome with effort and persistence. Tailor Learning: Every student learns differently, so it’s…

Making a correct subject framework for the student, helps the student to capitalize his/her learning effectively. Hence it is important for a tutor to structure the studies , ask for feedback and check if the student has understood to a level required and throw small easy tests to get the student good motivation. I have always excelled and been a…

As a tutor, the most important thing is to improve the student marks and to be interested and make them enjoy in the subjects they study. Additionally a tutor has to assist and encourage the student in learning processes and help them finish homework. Lastly, explaining the sums instead of learning theories by heart is also a challenging…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

The best teachers have a successful balance of both aspects. When a tutor is excited about the content, that will get the student excited as well. An…

Being able to meet the needs of the parents and students. Every student is unique and they have goals that they wish to achieve. Although these goals may be similar, I believe a tutor must listen attentively and work towards these particular targets so they can achieve what the student desires. A tutor also has to establish a sense of trust. This…

Simplify concepts in an understandable personalized way for them to understand at their own rythm. Develop their love/passion for a particular subject/field. As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

I think that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes much…

In my opinion, a tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. A tutor should provide a student a "light-bulb" moment, where they suddenly understand a concept, gain an idea or know how to answer a question. Light-bulb moments allow students to gain confidence in the subject, and thus achieve the goal of a higher mark. I believe it is also important for tutors to provide tips for dealing with stress,…

Inside North TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas practised simple division and tackled worded problems to strengthen his foundational numeracy.

For Year 11, Sophia focused on normal distribution and worked through her areas of difficulty using trial HSC exam papers.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James reviewed the balance of payments, covering both current and capital accounts, and explored how exchange rates are affected by demand and supply for the Australian dollar, using past HSC short-answer questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on calculus struggled to set out homework clearly, which made it difficult to identify where his thinking broke down—"his understanding of calculus & his homework setting out" was a tutor's observation.

In Year 11 Economics, one student often skipped writing formulas for opportunity cost and labour force participation rate, so errors crept in unnoticed when revising calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided showing division steps in maths problems; as the tutor noted, "divisions and reading questions" required extra attention because missing working led to repeated confusion over basic procedures.

Recent Achievements

One North Turramurra tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 12 student who, after struggling to tell apart the different balance of payments accounts in economics, now accurately distinguishes between them and explains what drives deficits or surpluses.

In Year 11 maths, another student had trouble with fractions on a previous test but recently solved fraction problems independently, showing the extra practice paid off.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to rush through questions has started pausing to read each one carefully before answering—a noticeable change in approach during recent sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra North Public School.
