The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

As tutor it is important to me that my students know that I care for their success just as much as them. And that I am a support system that they should feel comfortable to contact and reach out to in times of help, outside of class. Overall, the best thing I can do as a tutor is be mentally and emotionally there fir my students. I believe my…

Everything begins with building a relationship with the child/student and getting to know them as a person, what interests them inside and outside of school. I believe in my students and their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, I believe in you! You can do this! I won't…

The most important things a tutor can do are to foster a growth mindset, build confidence, and personalize their teaching approach to the student’s needs. Encouraging students to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles can improve their motivation and resilience. A tutor should also provide clear explanations,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student's confidence, tailor their teaching to the student's learning style, and create a safe space where questions are encouraged. A good tutor doesn't just help a student understand content, they help them feel capable, motivated, and supported throughout their learning…

There are 2 things that are most important. First is to help the students develop a thought process instead of just coming up with answers. An independent thought process can help the student a lot in the future as well. And second, beyond passing exams, the tutor’s job is to ignite an interest in the subject so the student wants to keep…

It’s not just about explaining the subject—it’s about helping them believe they can do it. A good tutor listens, encourages questions, and creates a space where the…

Ensuring that they grasp the knowledge taught is the most crucial thing for me. If they are able to teach it to others, I feel that I have done my job as a tutor. I find it second nature to explain theories to others. I also find ways to make memorising easier. My favourite would be to say tht unsaturated fats are kinky, this is due to the kinks…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to become independent. I would say that tutoring is only a temporary solution to their academic problems. If they are going to enter a university, get a real job or did not have enough money to pay for tutoring services, I would want them to learn on their own. A time would…

A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor must be aware of the needs of a student. They must understand what the student already knows, and how they best learn, and a good tutor can adapt to different student needs. A tutor needs to inspire the students in such a way that they know what their efforts will make them accomplish. A very few teachers are able to provide the contextual applications of what they teach the students. I believe it is paramount that a student know about WHY he is being taught something. Sparking interest in studies is not easy at times…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow an understanding of analysis in their mind on how to approach and answer the relevant question. Students have to learn the material themselves, however a guidance is required to what is relevant material to read and where is the focus on the study. I feel that I can understand when a…

Inside North TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas practised simple division and tackled worded problems to strengthen his foundational numeracy.

For Year 11, Sophia focused on normal distribution and worked through her areas of difficulty using trial HSC exam papers.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James reviewed the balance of payments, covering both current and capital accounts, and explored how exchange rates are affected by demand and supply for the Australian dollar, using past HSC short-answer questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on calculus struggled to set out homework clearly, which made it difficult to identify where his thinking broke down—"his understanding of calculus & his homework setting out" was a tutor's observation.

In Year 11 Economics, one student often skipped writing formulas for opportunity cost and labour force participation rate, so errors crept in unnoticed when revising calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided showing division steps in maths problems; as the tutor noted, "divisions and reading questions" required extra attention because missing working led to repeated confusion over basic procedures.

Recent Achievements

One North Turramurra tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 12 student who, after struggling to tell apart the different balance of payments accounts in economics, now accurately distinguishes between them and explains what drives deficits or surpluses.

In Year 11 maths, another student had trouble with fractions on a previous test but recently solved fraction problems independently, showing the extra practice paid off.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to rush through questions has started pausing to read each one carefully before answering—a noticeable change in approach during recent sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra North Public School.
