Encourage the student to be curious about what they are learning and help them realise that with perseverance and hard work, anyone can master mathematics. I regard myself as a patient person who is willing to help people thoroughly understand what they are learning, which I believe is very important in mathematics as every new concept builds on…

I believe it is the ability to reach out to a student and ensure there weakness in particular subjects are overcome and maximising there overall marks. Whilst also teaching the them techniques they can utilise when they hit a issue. Furthermore, preparing them for exam situations where they will be under pressure by teaching them techniques they…

I believe effort is the most important thing, regular check ins, solving problems for the student and being able to not only be a tutor but also a friend. Lacking effort to corny especially when I was a tutor made me feel like I wasn’t important and I wasn’t getting my moneys worth. As a tutor I believe I’m able to create a strong connection…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

I believe one of the things a tutor should find important is to help find coping mechanisms the students can use to ease their exam anxiety. As well as that I believe a tutor should work at the pace that best suits the student rather than the tutor. I believe that I am an outgoing, confident and kind person who can get along with all types of…

A step by step technique. It is important that the student is shown the correct way to solve a problem as the student might not have understood the basics of the lesson. When teaching the student, it is important to go through the lesson and make sure the student understands the lesson before commencing with the assignment. It is out job to…

Set them on the right path. Helping them to understand concepts and develop skills (rather than just doing things for them) will mean that they can go on to use these skills themselves. This is very important for exam-taking. Communication. I ask for their input and check that they understand what I'm saying. I am patient and will explain a…

Helping them to develop their own learning style, or styles, to perform in a variety of circumstances is one of the most critical things a tutor can impart on a student. Examinations and content will never be delivered in the exact same way, so providing students with the means to navigate the ambiguities of examination and focus purely on the…

Inside North WahroongaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Izzy practised converting between grams, kilograms, millilitres, and litres while also working through volume calculations.

For Year 8 Ella, recent sessions focused on solving ratios in textbook exercises and applying speed-distance-time formulas using real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 9 Orla worked on expanding algebraic brackets and revising key terms like coefficients and variables, along with practice multiplying positive and negative integers.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, skipping written steps meant errors in sign changes went unnoticed; as one tutor noted, "he moved a negative without showing working, so the answer didn't match."

A Year 11 student tackling trigonometry had trouble recalling which formula to use—often due to messy notes and incomplete summaries, making revision slow.

For a Year 5 student practicing times tables, over-reliance on counting fingers caused hesitation under timed conditions.

In another case, missing homework for networks (Year 10) left gaps unaddressed before class.

When assessment content wasn't provided ahead of time, preparation felt rushed and unfocused.

Recent Achievements

One North Wahroonga tutor recently noticed a real shift with a Year 10 student who used to hesitate over worded problems—she now quickly understands what's being asked and starts solving without delay.

A high schooler working on trigonometry made steady progress, tackling harder network questions independently after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, in the younger years, Ella (Year 4) showed new initiative by using a visual method for dividing small numbers—something she struggled with before—and even started asking clarifying questions on her own during the session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Yes , I am very pleased with Ed. Early days and my daughter has been a little reticent and awkward about having a tutor however I am going to make her stick it out . I however, am  very pleased with Ed and his approach with Olivia Look forward to seeing some results in the near future

I'm very happy with the progress that Abbey is making with Isabel, Isabel had lost most of her confidence in her ability to do her school work. Abbey's positive approach to Isabel's work is starting to reflect on Isabel.

Caroline is fabulous. We have had complicated family issues in the last month and will be getting back on track in term 4 and expect to have Caroline each week until after exams. Many thanks
