Important things a tutor can do for a student can be as subtle as providing the basic habits of Learning and self progression for the student. Many younger students struggle with this and tutoring can only go so far for them. Enforcing self-learning and the confidence to learn sometimes can be more beneficial than the topics covered. Personal…

A tutor is someone with the power to completely change a student's outlook on a subject. If we are able to make them feel like understanding the subject is not of unreasonable difficulty and can instead be very stimulating and rewarding, that inspiration could change their life ! Improving their grades, is then only a byproduct of good…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to adapt to their learning style. In my experience, everyone learns differently and learning to personalise one's teaching style is a key part of a student's success as it enables them to truly grasp the topics taught in an easily understandable way. I find it works extremely and plays a…

The most important thing is for a tutor to understand the student and listen to them. They need to accomodate to what the student thinks they need work on, but a tutor should also offer suggestions as well as motivate their student, encouraging them and helping them to be the best they can be. I consider the two most important things for a tutor to do are to first inspire confidence in the student and identify the area of difficulty as precisely as possible. Students are generally not equipped to identify the precise area of their difficulty as they don't have the knowledge to fully place it in the context of the subject. By…

As a tutor, I believe every student is different and has their own way of learning. 1) Firstly, we should understand their learning pattern and then personalize our way of teaching. 2) Secondly, a tutor should ensure the student's attention towards the lesson. 3) Thirdly, a tutor should be patient and a good listener allowing the student…

Inside Norton SummitTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alyssia reviewed titrations in chemistry, focusing on molar ratios and rearranging equations like n = m/M and C = n/V, as well as galvanic cells and balancing redox equations for her exam.

In Year 10, Sam worked on sketching linear graphs by finding x- and y-intercepts using the gradient-intercept method, then practised identifying equations of lines through various methods including calculating gradients.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily revised univariate statistics by exploring mean, median, mode, range, and began working with interquartile range using sample data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to rely on previous answer formats when solving algebra problems; as one tutor noted, "he looked back at old examples instead of working through new reasoning steps."

In a Year 12 chemistry session, the student was hesitant to attempt the written discussion portion of an assignment and avoided "thinking outside the box" when applying concepts in unfamiliar situations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student was sometimes easily distracted during sessions, making it difficult to focus and set clear goals for what to cover next. This meant valuable lesson time was lost regaining focus or reviewing known methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Norton Summit noticed Alyssia, a senior student, moved from needing guidance on titration equations to independently solving even complex questions with mixed molar ratios by the end of her session.

Alessandro, in Year 10, showed a real shift—he now arrives knowing exactly which maths concepts he's struggling with and directs the session by asking focused questions rather than waiting passively.

Meanwhile, Lucy in Year 6 used to hesitate when facing new statistics topics but recently began tackling practice problems on her own once shown the method, showing more initiative with each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Norton Summit Primary School.
