The most important thing a tutor can do is be flexible to cater to the students needs, allowing them to gain valuable knowledge quicker than usual. A tutor should be perceived as a role model for the student to allow them to be mutually respected and gain trust in the learning journey. A tutor should connect with students on a level beyond simply…

The best mentors I've had were the ones that pushed me to see my own potential the way they easily could, espicially when I came close to giving up. They reignited my passion for the hard subjects through their own love for the content, and through the way they connected concepts to daily life, bringing the subject to life. I believe a tutor's…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, explain ideas in a way they can understand, and give them the support they need to learn at their own pace. Being such a recent student…

Inside Oaklands JunctionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Bianca revised all questions she'd found challenging and built a personalised cheat sheet for her upcoming test.

Year 10 lessons with Liam included practice on exercises 8.5 and 8.6, focusing on advanced algebraic manipulation and problem-solving strategies.

Meanwhile, Year 11 sessions with Ava concentrated on exam revision, tackling typical short-answer questions and working through common pitfalls in mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, a student repeatedly forgot to bring required materials like their exercise book and CAS calculator, which led to lost lesson time ("student forgot all required materials").

In VCE English, one student arrived without having watched the assigned film or prepared study notes, leaving them unable to contribute fully.

A Year 8 learner misplaced crucial notes before a SAC—this meant extra stress trying to recover missed content last minute.

For a Year 11 Maths class, skipping written steps was noted: "should try their best with writing out all their working out, without skipping steps," making it hard to catch and correct errors.

Recent Achievements

One Oaklands Junction tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously struggling with test performance, recently achieved improved results on a major assessment by focusing more during sessions and asking targeted questions about his mistakes.

In Year 8, another student who used to stay quiet now regularly brings her own questions to the lesson and even asked for extra homework last week.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who was hesitant with new maths concepts earlier in the term surprised the tutor by working through five exercises independently and finishing all of them correctly during one session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Matthew seems to be of to a good start. Vivian seems to have the competence and patience that other tutors have not had. We are happy to continue working with Vivian and hopefully Matt will eventually show signs of improvement.

I'm very pleased with Carly at this stage Nerys' attitude towards Math has changed already and that's extremely positive.  Carly is always there on time and stays the full hour, she also communicates effectively about any schedule changes. So far so good.

Thank you for your email. Based on the sessions held to date with Ai-linh, Nathan is really enjoying her teaching style. From my perspective she is really sweet and is always punctual and consistent which has really maximised Nathan's learning and our ability to plan for effectively. Thank you for arranging for Ai-linh to assist Nathan.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Elevation Secondary College.
