The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her comfortable and be a like a friend. It is crucial for a tutor to make the students understand that they are free to ask any doubts or questions without being afraid. I am mostly available out of tuition hours as well via text or call. So I will be there if they have any last…

Based on my experience as a university student, I find tutors to be more approachable than professors and willing to offer assistance and guidance for any issues students may face. My favourite strength is my ability to easily communicate with younger people, regardless of their age. As an international student, I firmly believe that consistency,…

For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Most clients hire a personal trainer not solely for their instruction but for their motivation and I belive this also applies in tutoring. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

I believe one of the most important things for a tutor is to give unlimited support to their students, answering their questions properly and patiently both in and out of class. what's more, a tutor should design their class for students and always get well-prepared. Except from these, a good tutor is also expect to be easily approachable and…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. Presenting the problems as manageable and breaking them down helps the student gain your trust…

Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. Local Reviews

Henry was very happy with Hayden's style of tutoring. He found him clear and concise in the way he explained methods, and was teaching him the same way his teacher is at school. Whilst I was listening in the background I could hear that Hayden was very encouraging towards Henry which I'm sure gave him some confidence to tackle the next equation. I know that Hayden will leave more and more homework going forward, he was keen to get to know Henry as a person, identify his strengths and weaknesses first.

Inside OakleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving quadratic equations and practiced graphing equations, using examples to connect algebraic solutions with their graphical representations.

In Year 11, Harry focused on applying the rational root theorem to polynomials and tackled quartic equations from recent exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James completed Math Methods Chapter 7 example problems, emphasizing function analysis and calculus applications relevant to his upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's written work in algebra showed he skipped showing steps, which hid sign errors—this meant time was lost retracing calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 11 student tackling calculus became distracted during sessions and often left questions incomplete when focus slipped.

For a Year 6 learner, diagrams and tables were sometimes missing or messy, making it hard to track working in worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided writing out full solutions for fraction tasks, as noted: "just full working out," resulting in missed marks on tests even when the method was understood.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now confidently brings up challenging calculus questions at the start of each session, keen to tackle them together.

Another high schooler had been struggling with test mistakes in algebra but has started identifying exactly where she went wrong and correcting her own work before asking for feedback—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant with multiplication tables is now reciting them unprompted and focusing for longer stretches during lessons, finishing all assigned problems independently last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
