A tutor should always strive to cater to the students needs. Many students have different aspirations, attitudes and interests. A tutor should be able to analyse the situation and adjust his/her teaching methods accordingly. I am passionate, energetic, motivated and organised. I always prepare the content required, a day before each students…

Teaching the students that they have the ability to achieve great grades on their own. Many of the problems that face the students is a lack of self belief. The concepts and questions can seem very daunting at times at it is very easy to get into the mindset that it is too difficult. As a maths tutor much of the success that the students achieve…

Inspire them about how to think about the question and maybe, the world in a logical and rational way. As one of my lecturer once told me, "what I can teach you is not the knowledge itself, but the problem solving skills you learnt from this course". I am energetic in teaching maths and, particularly, in the interesting parts about Maths. E.g. we…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a maths tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects…

As someone who was constantly pushed to work harder during Year 12 I can guarantee you, I would not have been able to achieve the results I did without the support of my teachers and tutors. I also think targeted teaching is very important -…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is convey knowledge to the student that isn't limited to an exam paper. The student should be able to understand the subject rather than parroting back model answers. A tutor should gage the student’s level of understanding in order to adapt their teaching style and lesson plan. They should not only explain content, but most importantly, should aid in solving some practice problems step-by-step, before allowing them to complete some on their own. The more practice problems they see, the more comfortable they…

Inside Oakleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Dylan worked through a diagnostic quiz and reviewed probability concepts, reinforcing skills with targeted practice on challenging questions.

For Year 11 Parth, recent sessions focused on explaining the effects of changes in the cash rate on aggregate demand and unemployment, as well as developing structured written responses for economics papers covering AD-AS models and Australia's economic goals.

Meanwhile, another Year 11 student tackled market failure topics in Economics—such as externalities and allocative efficiency—using SAC preparation materials and short-answer exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps while factorizing led to repeated calculation errors—one tutor observed, "lots of middleman equations left out," which made it harder to spot where mistakes occurred.

In VCE Economics, a student sometimes rushed through multiple choice questions without reading them fully, resulting in missed marks and confusion when tackling earlier topics.

Another senior student's essay responses lacked clear explanations of diagrams and omitted key terminology, especially under time pressure.

These habits meant valuable time was spent reworking answers or clarifying concepts instead of building new skills or gaining confidence with advanced material.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh East tutor noticed a Year 12 student who used to rush through written responses now taking time to structure answers clearly, adding more economic terminology and connecting ideas—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them approach tough factorisation problems much more independently; they finished most worksheet questions on their own after needing frequent hints in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously hesitated to ask for help began raising their hand when stuck, leading to them finishing all ten multiplication questions without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Amsleigh Park Primary School.
