I would like to answer two points which are very important 1. The tutor must understand the feeling of the student so as to understand where he/she is facing problem in the subjects. If you are able to remove the problem you are half way down. 2. If a maths tutor can make change from students' hate for the subject to love for the subject in my…

Be well prepared for every lesson and be responsible for every student. If students get confused and stuck with the same problems, try to think of different ways that can help. I think I can quickly react and solve most of the problems students may ask when it comes to my expertise in subjects like maths and…

Foremost, a maths tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. For example, helping a student open up means that they have developed that skill which will help them to open up to their teachers perhaps at school etc. I believe that the role of a teacher is to help students…

I believe it is important to create a safe space of learning. Oftentimes, students feel uncomfortable asking teachers about questions, or speaking out in front of class. Establishing your tutoring time as a space in which they can address their concerns and queries, without fear of looking stupid, is instrumental in gaining progress in learning,…

Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a maths tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects…

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
