A tutor's most important role is to create an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. I learned this from my own tutor, who was friendly and patient, letting me make mistakes before gently guiding me to the right answers. One of my strengths as a tutor is open communication with families, working together…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make their students curious about the subject they are studying and help them retain the knowledge they had learnt I think my strengths are that I have a lot of knowledge in subjects that some students have trouble in and I can further expand that knowledge so that each student gets to understand it…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a comfortable, non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to ask questions without fear of feeling “stupid†and to support them at their individual level. By meeting students where they are and encouraging progress at their own pace, tutors can build confidence, foster…

Being encouraging is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. A student who is made to feel comfortable and supported - in a way that is often impossible in a school setting with 30+ children - may feel motivated and empowered to take control of their education. Encouraging a student can ameliorate the stressful feelings associated…

Understanding is one of the most important things as you need to understand the student's problems, understand the solutions and help them understand. Another thing is trust to break down the fundamental issues of a student; they need to trust you enough to be comfortable sharing their weaknesses. My strength as a tutor is my empathy as it is a…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to inspire students through education. The world of education is so vast and enriching, both primary and secondary school is a long journey and for my students to enjoy education rather than drag their feet through the process is one of my biggest hopes and goals. There are endless possibilities…

A tutor can help a student not only get better grades in the subject, yet make their learning process enjoyable so they become way more engaged than usual. Furthermore, a tutor can help a student realize and unleash their locked potential and make them strive towards excellence while boosting motivation so they are not let down. Additionally, a…

A tutor’s main role is to help a student understand and build confidence in what they’re learning. This means being patient, providing clear explanations, and offering encouragement when things get tough. It’s also important to identify the student’s or learners strengths and weaknesses so we can focus on what really matters for their…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them truly understand the material, build their confidence, and make learning enjoyable. It is about explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them, encouraging them when they are struggling, and finding ways to keep them engaged and interested. A good tutor helps…

A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

Become a role model and help inspire them to become the best version of themselves. I want to be someone who can help them expand their horizon for learning. Always receive feedback from the student, ask the student if they are understanding and explain in their own words any concepts we learned at the end of the session. Ask the student any questions they have. Provide notes/examples step by step so that the student can learn and ask any questions about why that is so. Always be there to support the…

Pass on knowledge about how to become self-sufficient and break down work so that it's less overwhelming. Moreover, teaching students how to learn actively, rather than passively is incredibly significant. It is what will help prepare them for VCE, tertiary education, and just general adult life. Additionally, it is important that tutors…

Give them time to learn and not just push through content. Patience is really one of the key players that should take part when tutoring a student. The time and effort one should invest in a student will really play a massive role in making gradual changes for the student naturally leading to a greater milestone in their learning process. Showing empathy is another factor. Having the ability to understand…

Being fully attentive and aware of the student. I know from experience that while in a classroom it’s very easy for a teacher to overlook a student asking a question, or even for the teacher to not answer the question as they misunderstood. However as a tutor, I’ll be able to re-open such dialogue and allow them to understand the concepts…

The biggest thing a tutor can do is create a urge or love for the subject. I will only have limited amount of time with them, so creating self motivation will help them be better. Most students who score very high marks most often love te subject which causes them to work harder without realising it because it is not hard work but it becomes fun…

Adapting to students knowledge and way they learn is also important as a student could be a practical learner with real life examples or a theoretical learner,…

Inside OfficerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked on finding the area and perimeter of square and triangle shapes as well as practicing persuasive writing.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on algebraic fractions and revising index laws to strengthen his understanding of algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia completed a chemistry assessment involving chemical reactions and practiced mathematics probability questions using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 10 English session, the student's writing showed frequent grammar and spelling errors, yet he rarely proofread—even when mistakes were highlighted by Microsoft Word.

"He seems comfortable just passing and not striving to achieve his best," a tutor noted after reviewing an assignment.

In Year 9 Mathematics, answers were often unchecked, with simple calculation slips (like 12 Ă— 6) overlooked due to skipping review steps.

In both Years 7 and VCE-level sessions, uncharged iPads repeatedly delayed lessons by up to fifteen minutes while he searched for a working device. This left less time for targeted learning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Officer noticed one Year 11 student now independently double-checks his maths work, catching errors on his own—previously he'd submit answers without reviewing.

Another high schooler who used to hesitate with assignments has started structuring essays solo and comes up with her own arguments, showing real initiative compared to earlier sessions where she waited for prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once guessed at tricky words is now sounding them out carefully and reads whole pages aloud without needing picture cues. Last week, she finished reading a chapter unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardinia Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Officer Primary School.
