I would first try to understand what’s causing the struggle—whether it’s a gap in knowledge, a lack of confidence, or simply feeling overwhelmed. Then, I’d adjust my approach, maybe by revisiting the basics, using different examples, or setting small, achievable goals. I’d also encourage them by highlighting their progress so they feel…

The Most important thing a tutor can do is to share every knowledge he or she has, every concept and tricks he/she learned in their schooling time. Plus, a tutor must share real time experience or the application of the subject that why we are studying this, what's the need of this. I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. I think helping them with the home work related problems and also giving them a problem or two to solve from the teaching of the day. Simple things like repetitive recalling and revising can also do…

Helping student get better grades, I can not make a student that generally get 30% magically to 90%. However, I can try making them improve their grades by changing their habits in learning. On of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make sure they understand the concept fully and understand how a formula was found instead of just using it to solve problems. I also believe it is important to make sure things are explained intuitively to students to help them understand the specifics of a topic better. Lastly, I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand a student's personality, behaviour and approach to learning. The tutor can alter the learning method to suit the individual student. A tutor needs to understand that all students are different; thus, the approach they use to teach them should also vary. For example, students…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I feel that understanding the student's moods and learning styles is very important for a tutor to teach effectively. The most important thing is to make them understand what you are teaching. If they won’t get it right , tutor’s all efforts are worthless. And another important thing is to make the students comfortable with the tutor so that they won’t hesitate to question when they don’t understand. My teaching skills, frequent interaction with students,…

Inside Old GuildfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ali practiced double-digit multiplication and division without remainders, and worked on converting fractions into decimals using number lines.

In Year 8, Sara focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving for x—and reviewed how to convert lengthy word problems into solvable mathematical expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student James revised divisibility rules (by 2, 3, 5, and 10) alongside work on factors and multiples through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Mathematics, one student's exam performance was affected by panic under time pressure—"he rushed the questions and did not check over his work before submission"—leading to repeated calculation errors that went unnoticed.

In Year 4 English, another learner often gave up when faced with complex vocabulary or unfamiliar storylines; as noted, "once he hits a 'hard' question that isn't similar to others he gives up."

For both students, incomplete homework in several weeks made it difficult to identify which concepts truly needed review.

Missed opportunities for self-checking and communicating confusion led to persistent gaps in understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Old Guildford tutor noticed a big shift in Younas, a high school student who now speaks up right away about what he doesn't understand—previously, he'd hesitate or keep quiet, but lately he's been quick to communicate confusion and work through tough concepts like fractions and averages.

Another high schooler, after struggling with test mistakes, took the initiative to review each error in detail and asked for specific practice next time.

Meanwhile, Andrew (primary) used to get stuck on reading tricky words but now reads aloud without giving up, explains new vocabulary using his own actions, and even uses those words in sentences.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Guildford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Old Guildford Public School.
