The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them improve their analytical skills and provide them guidance to fully understand and grasp the learnings from the tutoring session. Since I love kids, I have the patience and utmost understanding of their short span of attention to details and lectures. Having said that, I…

Parents of my students frequently tell me that their kids feel safe and loved in my classroom. As someone who grew up in a family that struggled financially, I am constantly looking out for signs that a youngster may be hungry, exhausted, or in need. One sixth-grade student immediately stood out to me when I first started teaching because he was…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student’s confidence, provide consistent support, and create a safe space for learning. A good tutor doesn’t just help with grades, they help the student believe in their ability to learn and succeed. Encouraging curiosity, setting goals, and providing tailored feedback are also key. I believe there are no good or bad students but some pupil just need more attention or want their curiosities answered before they can visualise the concepts. A teacher must be patient, resilient and respectful towards their students. As a teacher, I am patient and respectful. I wish for my students to grow organically and understand complex…

Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. I believe I am good at breaking down harder concepts into individual relatable, easy to understand components to teach separately, then…

Teach them the methods and concepts, not answers. By doing so we are ensuring the students can solve any problem as they know how to. The tutors should adapt to the way the student learns, and change the way they teach if the student isn't understanding. Some of my strengths would include, being patient which I believe is important for a tutor…

All students learn and understand in different ways; some are visual learners, others learn best off a textbook etc. Therefor the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding and patient, especially when the student doesn't understand something. It's important to go through the detailed steps to identify where the student gets…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure the student understands the content, and doesn't just get the marks if they don't understand the content properly. They also need to be someone who the student can feel comfortable talking to and asking questions, regardless of how 'silly' the question may seem. Good communication…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge the students intelligence. Einstein said it best himself "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." And now we are learning more and more that there are multiple teaching styles…

The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire confidence. Within the class, it is a safe space for the student to talk about their short comings or lack of understanding. It is then the tutors job to help the student and breed confidence. This then extends out of the class and into the exam hall. My biggest strength is empathy and being able…

I believe that the two most important things a tutor can provide are a motivation and a path forward for students. A tutor's job is then to simultaneously provide these in a way tailored to their student. Striking that balance is key to ensuring that the student not only understands the material that they've been taught, but also gain skills in…

Inside Old ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4, Zoe practised calculating perimeter and also worked through basic counting exercises.

For Year 10, Tom focused on fractions and consolidating operations with different denominators.

In Year 11 Advanced Maths, Grace tackled trigonometric functions including reciprocal functions and learned to sketch their graphs by hand.

Recent Challenges

Several students in Years 3–6 were set multiplication homework but did not show written working in their books, making it difficult to spot where confusion arose; as one tutor noted, "no working out was in her book."

In a Year 10 maths lesson, a student became confused by multi-step trigonometry questions—struggling most when the question wording was complex or required combining sequences.

At senior level, missed homework ("homework from previous week had not been done") meant progress stalled and extra time was needed to revisit old ground rather than moving forward with new material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Old Toongabbie noticed one high school student steadily grew more independent during exam revision—by the end, she could select and apply integration strategies on her own, something she'd hesitated with just a week earlier.

Another Year 10 student began double-checking his working after past test mistakes; last session, he corrected errors himself instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who previously left homework unfinished surprised her tutor by completing every task ahead of time and arriving eager to share what she'd learned about grouping numbers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Toongabbie Public School.
