The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel seen, supported, and capable. That means creating a safe space to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow. A good tutor doesn't just deliver content, they adapt to each student's pace, learning style, and confidence level. Ultimately, it's about building the student's self-belief and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not theoretical but…

The most important things I can do for students are to go through the problems with them step by step, to solve their problems in learning, and to prove they have the ability to solve the problems themselves. I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Additionally, beyond academic achievements, a tutor should inspire a passion for learning and promote…

A tutor's responsibility includes building a student's confidence by helping them believe in their abilities, and to ensure they develop a deep understanding of concepts, not just memorization. Tailoring the teaching approach to the student's learning style is important for making the material more accessible. Also, creating a safe and supportive…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Inside OrmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on solving simultaneous linear equations and finding gradients from y = mx + c, using graph sketches to visualise relationships.

Year 10 student Jacob revised completing the square and factorisation by grouping, then practised graphing parabolas using both techniques.

For Year 11, Sophie tackled index and exponential equations alongside revision of logarithm laws, focusing on simplifying complex expressions step-by-step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's working was hard to follow: he often left out brackets and negatives, making it difficult to check for sign errors in factorising quadratics.

For a Year 11 probability task, another needed extra reminders to bring the right notes and practice sheets—forgetting materials slowed revision on conditional events.

A Year 10 student tackling simultaneous equations sometimes hesitated to show steps, especially with negatives; this meant time was lost fixing hidden calculation slips rather than moving ahead.

In senior calculus, over-reliance on notes for derivatives delayed progress when formulas weren't immediately at hand.

Recent Achievements

One Ormond tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze when asked to solve simultaneous equations now working through them out loud, checking each step rather than staying silent and stuck.

In a recent high school session, a Year 12 student who had been avoiding surds altogether managed to simplify several on her own and even asked for extra examples.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once rushed and guessed at multiplication facts slowed down during practice, carefully double-checking answers before moving on. At the end of his lesson, he finished all ten problems without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College - Ormond Campus. Alternatively lessons can be had at Ezy Math Tutoring Ormond, 5/596 North Rd, Ormond, 3204, VIC, 03 7073 7122
