Skills like organization, task initiation and time management are essential to being a great learner. Tutors can work at these skills to create confident, independent learners. I believe that…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student, according to me, is to foster an environment of kindness and encouragement. Students that need tutoring may often feel unwelcome in a classroom setting and as such, it is important to cultivate an environment that allows room for mistakes, as well as encourages a genuine excitement for…

A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

To me, the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Helping a student refine and better understand what they were taught in class. I think I have a strong…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is leaving them with a range of tools for study that they can use on their own at school or if I’m not around. Give them the resources to be their best student. Rather than just giving them the answer outright, set up a pathway for them to solve their problem themselves. I'm a very patient person, I think I've learned from past 'bad' tutors that patience is key to the student enjoying the session. I also consider myself to be creative with solutions if the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is identify where a student may be missing a piece of information or has skipped a step of understanding, which is blocking further academic progress. This type of close observation is what is (in my opinion) most often missed by classroom teachers. - Educational adaptability. Can quickly change methods of…

Lisa-Marie, Osborne Park

Inside Osborne ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Jade worked through a full yearly maths exam to identify strengths and areas for growth, then focused on solving simultaneous equations and piecewise linear equations by reviewing questions together.

Year 10 student Ben tackled trigonometry concepts such as using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides or angles, and applied these skills to worded problems involving angles of elevation and depression.

For Year 8 maths, Ella revised Pythagoras' theorem for both straightforward calculations and real-life applications, as well as basic trigonometric ratios—practicing with diagrams to boost understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student did not bring their maths book, so time was lost organizing materials before starting on syllabus-based work.

Another Year 11 student received a test back and admitted, "I tried finishing the test as fast as I could," which led to stress-driven errors and missed marks in geometry proofs.

A Year 2 student needed guidance recalling addition facts; when tired, she would slowly count from one instead of using number sense—making even simple sums feel draining.

In Year 6 algebra homework, no written working was shown for a linear equation task, leaving misunderstandings hidden until review.

Recent Achievements

One Osborne Park tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, Ben, has started to check his work aloud and use backchecking strategies—he used to rush through problems, but now he catches more of his own errors before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 student worked through normal distribution questions independently for the first time, confidently answering both textbook and past test examples after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who once relied heavily on help for column addition now completes these sums up to three digits with only a quick reminder at the start.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks for the email Erica, we have been very happy with Enya, she is making lots of effort to have interesting ways to teacher Jasper  the maths concepts and he is very happy after each session.

Thanks Erica, Jemma & Hunter get along very well I'm pleased to report. I've observed that Jemma has that natural communication talent that all gr8 teachers have i.e. they engage you with their knowledge.

No news is good news - we are very happy with Eddie! Thankyou for following up but all is great from our perspective. Thanks again
