1. To identify where the child needs help - be it in the process of solving a question, or in fact in the way they think of what the question is asking. 2. To be able to communicate point 1 above, such that the child is able to understand. 3. Holistically take into account that each child is different, sometimes it is not a matter of merely…

Definitely patience. I think its easy for people to think tutoring will be a cakewalk, knowing that you’re well versed in a subject. But having the ability to be able to slow down, and take the time that the student needs is very important I would say that I am: Kind Patient Have the ability to make it…

I think being approachable, encouraging and being attentive are the most important traits of being a tutor, I want to be able to have a personal relationship with students, in order for them to be comfortable and not be scared to ask me any questions. I want to be able to tutor in a way where students have fun while learning, and not think of it…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student are to be patient, be approachable, be kind and be able to teach. The student should be able to walk away from a lesson feeling confident in what they learned and not being afraid to ask any questions. I would definitely say my strengths as a tutor would be my ability to communicate…

Be supportive and show the student that they are determined to help them, regardless of any learning disadvantages or difficulties the student may have. I would say that this helps boost a student's self esteem - when they believe in themselves more, they are more likely to achieve their learning goals. I have good time management and…

Listening is the most important thing a tutor can do for the student. Tutors cannot understand a student's requirements and expectations until they effectively give time to the student for communicating the same. However, listening alone does not suffice. A tutor must act on these requirements and prepare custom learning plans. Being someone who…

I believe a tutor should be able to clearly communicate the fundamentals of a subject in simple terms to ensure the student can build on their knowledge. I believe this also increases the chances that the student will actually want to learn and improve more than they did before. Understanding any problems the student is facing with subject is also…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be available and walk with the students through any challenges they may be facing. I am a patient person, I understand that we all have different abilities when it comes to learning. I am also sincere in my approach to tutoring, I honestly hope that those I interact with become…

I think a tutor has to be flexible enough to change his or her teaching methods to cater for each student's personal condition. I also think that it is important for a tutor to be able to give student-life repeated advice that helps older students achieve the ideal study-work-life balance. I took the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program,…

The most important part of tutoring is passion for sharing knowledge. This may mean going for unpaid overtime, figuring out different teaching methods in your own time, and being happy by simply making a difference in someone's life. I understand what it feels like to struggle in a subject, so I believe I can use that understanding to provide high…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

Our daughter Meg has been struggling with multiplication and generally not interested in math at all. Since Angela has been tutoring Meg (for a few weeks now) we have seen a huge improvement in her math. Angela has a very gentle, friendly and patient approach in the way she teaches and puts a lot of thought and effort into her work i.e. she brings along many props. a white board, worksheets and visuals to make it easier for Meg to learn different strategies. Meg thinks she's great and really enjoys her lessons. Meg is also doing much better at school to. Angela is amazing at what she does and we couldn't be happier! We definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a tutor.

Inside PalmyraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Abbi focused on factorising and simplifying algebraic expressions, then moved on to solving quadratic equations using methods like completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Year 9 Isabel worked through trigonometry problems and revised for exams by tackling practice questions involving parabolas, simultaneous equations, and rationalising surds.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jimmy practiced rounding numbers using number lines for visualization, completed long division challenges, and reinforced essay writing skills by drafting structured body paragraphs together.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, Isabel often skipped working steps and rushed through long equations, leading to small errors: "She tends to solve things the 'hard' way without stopping and thinking about the best method." This cost marks in algebra and turning point problems.

For Year 10 Maths, Abbi struggled with worded quadratic questions—she found it difficult to extract key information and convert it into equations, especially after longer breaks from practice.

In Year 5 English, Jimmy's highlighting was unfocused; when asked to find important words in a passage, he highlighted almost everything, making reading slow and overwhelming.

Recent Achievements

One Palmyra tutor noticed Isabel's steady shift towards independence in Year 10 maths: after struggling with worded problems, she recently scored 81% on her exam—up from 60%—and now tackles most application questions solo.

In a recent session, Abbi (Year 11) moved from needing help to solving standard quadratic equations entirely on her own, even showing initiative by attempting harder simultaneous equation tasks without prompting.

Meanwhile, Jimmy (Year 4) made a leap in essay writing; he previously needed step-by-step guidance but managed to complete a full body paragraph himself for the first time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Jack and Justin are getting along well. Jack seems to have to continued to improve since Justin started tutoring.

David did come over yesterday for a lesson with Kyle. Like you mentioned, he is a diligent and competent tutor with experience in teaching. He did put in a lot of effort even before he arrived to make sure he knew what he was dealing with. I am very happy and impressed with his teaching. Just wish we had found him earlier!

Carolina likes Deeba, whom she says is a gifted teacher, & continues to learn at what is to me an amazing rate.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
