It is important to be patient with a student; they won't always understand what is being taught and as a tutor you need to be able to explain something in a way that they will understand the concept. I think it's also crucial that the tutor is organised; arrives a few minutes early and knows what they will be going through and brings any…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Students often learn at a different pace from each other and a tutor should understand when to slow down, when to speed up, or when to adjust the teaching style to suit the student's learning…

Being supportive is very important. A tutor must give plenty of encouragement and support to a student at all times in order to help them achieve their best. A tutor is a role model to the student, and having that role should not be taken lightly. I am able to adapt my teaching style to suit different students, and present solutions to problems in…

I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

Give them the confidence they need to stay motivated to acheive their Goals. Whether it be merely passing a class or excelling wih 99%, any improvement needs to be congratulated. As previously mentioned, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen. If you do not listen to the students expectations and responsiveness to the material then the sessions will not be productive, and the student will not improve. My strengths are that I am an incredibly patient tutor, as well as a good listener.…

I think the most important thing is to build their confidence. I know it can be challenging to be learning new concepts at school and not understand them, so I would make my students feel comfortable in coming to me with any questions no matter how small or large they are, to make themselves feel confident in their own abilities and learning…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence gradually and encourage active thinking. One way to improve academic confidence is to provide realistic goals and highlight progress and also normalise mistakes as part of leaning. It is also important for a tutor to guide a student to discover answers and praise effort…

If I had to simplify in one word it would be listening. Listening, I would argue, is without a doubt the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Force feeding infomation to a student who feels they have no say would be unhelpful. It is of upmost importance that the tutor listens to the student, recognises where work needs to be done and…

Help the student to understand concepts and how to think about solutions to problems and to think about how they apply concepts they learn, so that when they're alone they can think clearly and accurately for themselves. Local Reviews

Our daughter Meg has been struggling with multiplication and generally not interested in math at all. Since Angela has been tutoring Meg (for a few weeks now) we have seen a huge improvement in her math. Angela has a very gentle, friendly and patient approach in the way she teaches and puts a lot of thought and effort into her work i.e. she brings along many props. a white board, worksheets and visuals to make it easier for Meg to learn different strategies. Meg thinks she's great and really enjoys her lessons. Meg is also doing much better at school to. Angela is amazing at what she does and we couldn't be happier! We definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a tutor.

Inside PalmyraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Abbi focused on factorising and simplifying algebraic expressions, then moved on to solving quadratic equations using methods like completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Year 9 Isabel worked through trigonometry problems and revised for exams by tackling practice questions involving parabolas, simultaneous equations, and rationalising surds.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jimmy practiced rounding numbers using number lines for visualization, completed long division challenges, and reinforced essay writing skills by drafting structured body paragraphs together.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, Isabel often skipped working steps and rushed through long equations, leading to small errors: "She tends to solve things the 'hard' way without stopping and thinking about the best method." This cost marks in algebra and turning point problems.

For Year 10 Maths, Abbi struggled with worded quadratic questions—she found it difficult to extract key information and convert it into equations, especially after longer breaks from practice.

In Year 5 English, Jimmy's highlighting was unfocused; when asked to find important words in a passage, he highlighted almost everything, making reading slow and overwhelming.

Recent Achievements

One Palmyra tutor noticed Isabel's steady shift towards independence in Year 10 maths: after struggling with worded problems, she recently scored 81% on her exam—up from 60%—and now tackles most application questions solo.

In a recent session, Abbi (Year 11) moved from needing help to solving standard quadratic equations entirely on her own, even showing initiative by attempting harder simultaneous equation tasks without prompting.

Meanwhile, Jimmy (Year 4) made a leap in essay writing; he previously needed step-by-step guidance but managed to complete a full body paragraph himself for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
