I also believe they need to teach them how to go about solving new problems (the process) and how they will then use these skills in the future. As a tutor you can provide a child/student with a different outlook on their learning. For example, their school teacher may have explained it in a way that the child didn't particularly understand, and as a tutor you can give them a more unique and individual learning experience that they wouldn't get at school. Providing children with one-on-one…

Moreover, being flexible, patient and a good listener can help build a strong, personal relation with the student which will help them to work towards their goal. The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Inside ParadiseTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Damon practised writing imaginative narratives by planning story structure and developing introductions designed to hook readers, while also working on spelling through "look, say, cover, write, check" activities with a set of eight words.

Year 8 student Eliza focused on understanding gradients of perpendicular and parallel lines in coordinate geometry and practised finding equations of lines using graphing techniques.

For Year 9, Ashton revised DNA structure and replication in preparation for a biology test, covering the processes of mitosis using diagrams to reinforce key differences between stages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student needed encouragement before isolating the major idea of the author, but often forgot to bring source material for essay evidence—this slowed deeper analysis and made referencing harder.

A Year 9 Maths learner relied heavily on calculators, rarely showing written steps; this habit masked errors in algebraic rearrangement and led to repeated mistakes when formulas changed.

In a primary English session, messy handwriting and fidgeting with objects made it difficult for the student to transfer spoken ideas onto paper, particularly during imaginative writing tasks.

Each scenario resulted in lost time clarifying misunderstandings rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Paradise noticed a big shift for one primary student who now initiates creative writing tasks by first drawing his own story map, which helps him plan and finish imaginative narratives—something he previously avoided.

For Year 10 English, Jayden used to struggle providing evidence in essays but has recently started structuring responses with clear PEEL paragraphs and even integrated detailed examples without prompting.

Meanwhile, a senior Physics student showed new independence by bringing forward her own tricky topics at the start of sessions and worked through exam-style questions with less guidance than before, successfully answering nearly all problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sunrise Christian School Paradise.
