The most vital thing a maths tutor can do for any student is to ensure comprehension of the topic. Notably, in math. It is easy enough to follow a procedure on how to solve a problem, running through the steps that were taught. However, if a student can understand why those steps are happening, and delve into fundamentals of the problem, then they…

I believe that the purpose of a maths tutor is to tailor their teaching as closely as possible to the needs of every individual student; tutors should never take a one-size fits all approach to teaching. Whether that be addressing specific areas of weakness, or adopting a particular teaching style, every student has their own unique needs and ways…

Inspire them. One of the biggest roadblocks for many students is a general reluctance to do it due to negative stigma from either their parents, peers or even themselves. Sometimes when students don't quite grasp a concept, they will think "well I just don't get it", and then further down the line every time that concept is built upon, they will…

Help them learn the way they learn best. Education is extremely important, and often students that seek tuition are having troubles with the work, which is often caused by the teacher not teaching them in the way that they learn best. Inside Park RidgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ava revised addition, subtraction, multiplication, identifying fractions and shapes, and worked on worded questions involving money and measurement.

In Year 11, Lachlan focused on understanding the photoelectric effect in Physics by practising formula application and interpreting tricky exam-style wording.

For Year 12 student Emma, lessons centred on Chemistry's chemical synthesis and reactions—including calculating reaction yield—and also reviewed key industrial processes like the Haber and Contact processes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematical Methods, one student frequently hesitated when approaching worded modelling questions, often asking for reassurance even when steps were correct—she was reluctant to continue working on the question even when her steps were correct and methodical.

In Year 10 Physics, a student struggled to recognise which formula to apply during assessment reviews and needed multiple hints before proceeding, showing difficulty in independently navigating complex problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner continued doing most calculations mentally instead of writing out steps, leading to avoidable errors in three-digit subtraction with borrowing.

Recent Achievements

One Park Ridge tutor noticed a Year 12 student who used to rely on hints now working through exam questions independently, catching their own calculation mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a high schooler began openly asking why certain formulas were chosen—contrasting with earlier lessons where they stayed silent if unsure—and has started writing out full steps for tricky trig problems.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently completed her subtraction worksheet much faster than in previous weeks and explained aloud how she arrived at each answer, something she hesitated to do when first starting tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan West Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Park Ridge State School.
