Most importantly inspire the student, pass on my knowledge and passion. Having the student to love what she/he is studying achieves much more than teaching could solely achieve. I always teach a student 'how to think' instead of 'what to think'. I am very patient and flexible. Being a student at university, I understand both the tutor's and the…

A tutor is a way for the student to gain another angle from which to view the content, so as to better help with understanding. A tutor tailors their 'teaching' to a way which most assists the student with understanding and knowledge. The student's personal skill level can be evaluated and catered to by a tutor. I love the challenge which comes…

The most important thing is to help them understand subject content. I believe that true academic success comes with understanding the topics in question. While memorizing and doing questions can be helpful, it is very important to ensure a strong basis of understanding. This is what a tutor should provide. I am highly skilled at explaining things…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them at a conceptual level. By learning at a conceptual not only are students going to score better on there test but are likely to be more interested in the lessons. When learning subjects, I typically don\'t memorise content. Instead I try to get a deep understanding of the…

These skills will stay with them forever and will help them learn in any context. I am highly personable and empathetic. This…

Making education interesting and logical eliminates the need to study for a want to learn. I really feel that once that is understood, every learning experience can be made fun. I think a tutor can guide students through their academic journey and provide them with extra support that their school might be lacking. I think this can be achieved through the tutor coming up with an effective learning plan with their students and through open communication about the students’ strengths and weaknesses. I think a tutor can…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. So by showing understanding and appreciation for their effort, a student doesn't feel concerned for getting an answer wrong of…

To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. We need to be able to relate to how the students feels to truly be able to guide them at their own pace of learning. Being impatient and giving up on students will only lower the motivation and self-confidence of the student,…

I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lessons should give plenty of opportunities for students to test their knowledge as well as focusing on any grey areas by explaining any difficult concepts again. The second thing and perhaps…

Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Max built confidence with column addition and subtraction, then moved on to identifying odd and even numbers and describing fractions like halves and quarters using visual aids.

Year 5 student Emily practiced long multiplication, including multiplying two-digit numbers, and learned to convert between improper and mixed fractions by representing them on number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Josh focused on perimeter calculations for composite rectilinear shapes and consolidated understanding of area through grid-based problems before tackling worded questions involving mass and different units.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student struggled to recall subtraction methods and the reasons behind odd/even numbers when put on the spot, as a tutor observed: "she was unable to recall the exact methods of adding and subtracting, and the reason behind concepts of odd and even." This gap showed up especially during in-lesson questions without homework reinforcement.

In Year 7 mathematics, long division remained a stumbling block; confusion persisted after repeated attempts, particularly when switching between strategies or times tables were skipped. Without consistent written practice at home, these foundational processes often faded between lessons—leaving students unsure mid-task or reverting to less effective approaches under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Parkville tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who, after weeks of hesitation, finally started writing down her own instructions for homework—she used to rely on verbal prompts but now wants reminders she can check herself.

In Year 11 maths, one student who always struggled with worded multiplication and division problems is now independently tackling them using arrays and can explain his reasoning out loud without guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided symmetry exercises, surprised the tutor by completing both sides of a symmetry drawing accurately during the session and even asked for an extra challenge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
