The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is help them believe in themselves. Academic support is important, but confidence is what truly changes everything. When a student feels seen, heard, and supported, they start to trust their own ability to learn and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just explain concepts they create a safe…

When a student seeks for help of a maths tutor, it is important to figure it out where students get struggle or feel not confident. In addition, a tutor need to track up with students progress, exam schedule and use appropriate teaching approaches to improve students' academic achievement and self-esteem. The concept that students not confident…

I believe the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student, is to show the easiest method to learn the content of the subject. A tutor can teach the way to decode the subject matter. Once, the tutor teach the method to learn and the student understand that method, a student should become independent to learn similar topics. I think a…

The willingness to help and to commit time, energy, and patience. If the tutor is doing for the sake of doing, it shows the lack of commitment. I truly believe that teaching is a passion-driven job. Students will know your desire and commitment. One of my strength is my willingness to go down to the students' level rather than expecting the…

Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. I am organized, have a good memory and I plan all the lessons with anticipation. My experience have taught me that the student depends on how prepared you…

Listen to what the issue is and explain. I personally could do maths equations but if i didn’t know WHY something was in the formula it wouldn’t click and i’d be frustrated. That is until a wonderful teacher pointed this out and would send me explanations on why something is used. I think it’s important to listen to what the issue or…

I believe that patience is the most important. We always assume that others know the things we have already known, however, this is not true, so teachers' patience is very important for the students to learn the things they see for the first time. Also, impatient teachers may discourage the students' interest in a subject. Patience and my…

Might be controversial but it's not the subject matter itself most of the time, but the way the student approaches any particular problem or concept, often times with fear and anxiety which can lead to giving up before they have even started. I would stress it is most important to indirectly show them a more grounded approach before beginning to…

Most importantly a maths tutor needs to understand, empathise with and respect the student. Once this has been achieved a smooth flow of information between the student and tutor is possible guided by a mutual respect. Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have been very happy with Pat. Harriet has definitely progressed well in her maths under Pats tutoring.

Martha is an extremely polite and professional young woman. Martha is pleasant to deal with and is always on time. Anna is comfortable with and has enjoyed her sessions with Martha and has confidence in Martha's ability to help her with Maths.

We have no doubt the extra tutoring with Mina got Jamison over the line for a solid band 6.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
