Besides helping the student with their academic workload, I believe that being someone the student can confide in is important for a chemistry tutor especially in a 1-1 setting. At the end of the day, a tutor who can listen to their student will make it easier for both parties to cooperate and make the student feel more at ease as their worries…

Make a comfortable vibe for the students when you teach them. If the students feel comfortable to study with you and help them get interested in the subject, it will be easier for you to assist students in achieving their learning goals. And I believe that helping them make small improvements day by day is the most important thing a chemistry…

Provide adequate motivation and encouragement. A tutor is only half responsible for the student's progress, and the student is responsible for the other half through their own work and perseverance. It is therefore crucial that a chemistry tutor teaches not only content, but also good work ethic to a student by encouraging and motivating them to…

I believe the most important things a chemistry tutor can provide are motivation and discipline. I might not be the smartest tutor, but I’m there to accompany my students, help them trust themselves, remind them of their goals, and keep them disciplined in their studies whenever they feel lost. It’s not about how fast they progress but about…

Aside from teaching the content in an understandable and logical manner, I also think that a chemistry tutor should try to inspire a student to become a self-directed and motivated learner. Such a transformation creates the best performing students because they no longer overly rely on the tutelage of others. Rather, they learn to handle a variety…

As teachers have to look over a lot of students, students who fall behind or struggle with conventional learning styles only get a limited amount of help. I believe that while grades are important, they are not always completely comprehensive of a student's ability in a subject. Inside ParkwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Connor practised converting between units of length, volume, and mass, then reinforced measurement skills with area calculations and perimeter problems.

In Year 8, Seb worked through linear equations by plotting graphs to identify gradients and y-intercepts, as well as rearranging formulas to make x the subject using step-by-step algebraic methods.

For a senior student in Year 11 General Maths, recent sessions focused on applying the binomial theorem and analysing geometric sequences, including revision for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student avoided showing working when rearranging equations, leading to repeated confusion—"minimal writing" meant errors went unnoticed.

In Year 10, a learner skipped assigned textbook questions before an exam and struggled with significant figures; as the tutor noted, "she must do the homework questions I assigned to her before Monday for her exam."

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student kept forgetting key formulas in functions and did not record their steps clearly. The result: time was spent retracing old ground instead of moving forward confidently into new concepts or assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Parkwood tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints now independently solves linear function problems, even plotting graphs and pinpointing gradients without prompting.

In a recent session with a Year 12 group, students who previously mixed up how to calculate tax demonstrated clear understanding by correctly working through complex taxation scenarios on their own.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4—who often hesitated over her times tables—confidently recited the fours and explained why order of operations matters before moving on to trickier BODMAS challenges.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Vik is doing very well, my daughter is very happy. She would like to continue with him.

The tutoring is going really well with Jacob. Both Thomasine and Luke are really happy with him. They say he is really good and gives loads of examples. High praise indeed. Jonathan and I are delighted as well. We find him always on time, if not early, so far and he is very polite and easy to talk with. So thank you very much.

All good! Boys very happy with Josh. He has certainly helped their confidence and that is the start to better marks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mobile Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arundel State School.
