Being a tutor requires a great responsibility. The first and foremost thing a tutor can do is to be a friend with the student and develop a rapport. We have to understand them first then only we can approach accordingly through our teaching. It's like being a therapist and getting to know them better. If we succeed then we can easily transfer and…

I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! Tutoring is a form of specialised teaching, and two-way communication is fundamental to successful teaching. It is easy to talk at a child to teach them a concept on a basic level, but patience, asking the child questions and listening to their responses effectively are essential elements in ensuring the student understands the content. From many…

Ideally, although admittedly ironic, you want a student to be able to stand on their own two feet and achieve their goals without the need of a tutor at some point. So, although the direct role of a tutor is to teach content, the wider, arguably more profound role of a tutor is to teach lifelong skills, habits, and techniques that students can…

Always tell them not to be scared to ask. I often realize students are uncomfortbale to ask when they need help. It is important to ask for help and not to be embarassed about it because developing and making it better is good rather than silent. Inside ParkwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student David worked on understanding probability concepts, interpreting measures of spread, and reading two-way tables and Venn diagrams.

For Year 10, Lucy revised algebraic skills including solving linear equations and drawing linear graphs to strengthen her grasp of core algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Molly focused on Mathematics Methods by practicing differentiation techniques and exploring their real-world applications using sample problems.

Recent Challenges

Ongoing challenges with homework completion, especially in maths, were evident across several students in both Year 6 and senior secondary levels—"needs to do the home works" recurred in multiple sessions, even after lessons on fractions and multiplication charts.

In a Year 11 Mathematics Methods session, incomplete review of past test papers meant some error patterns persisted into new topics.

One Year 7 student avoided writing out working for surface area problems, making it difficult to spot where confusion began.

"Forgot to convert units" was a stumbling block in geometry tasks; time was lost re-explaining basic conversions rather than deepening problem-solving skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Parkwood noticed a Year 11 student who previously needed step-by-step guidance with Chemistry was able to tackle sample assessment problems on intermolecular forces almost entirely on his own this week.

Another high schooler made a leap in Maths by independently recognising the connection between algebraic and graphical solutions—a skill he'd struggled to link before.

For a younger student, after weeks of guessing silent letters in spelling tasks, she's now pausing to check each word carefully and correct herself before moving on. Last session, she completed her worksheet without needing any reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parkwood Primary School.
