Patience is first and foremost when you're with a student. It is vastly important that you should respect the pace at which the student learns and works at, to never pressure or rush the student, to challenge them without making them feel small or inadequate. We all learn in different ways and at different speeds - none of which are better or…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

A tutor must be very patient, approachable, and accepting, as students should feel safe and comfortable enough to ask any question without facing any judgment. A warm and friendly environment must be established. This is the most effective way for a student to learn, and be open to learning. A tutor must also be able to provide examples of the…

Being able to relate and convey information effectively to a student is an important skill for tutors to possess. As a student, they already have teachers who supply the material, and parents who remind them to study, but as a tutor, our job is to be a guide, and friend and offer help according to each of their individual needs. Another valuable…

I believe that tutors must be good analyzers if they want to succeed. I mean that they have to examine the way students study and practice and even think. After a good observation, they can provide students with the tools with which students can improve their weaknesses. This can be different form one student to another one. Besides, Encouraging…

Inside ParkwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student David worked on understanding probability concepts, interpreting measures of spread, and reading two-way tables and Venn diagrams.

For Year 10, Lucy revised algebraic skills including solving linear equations and drawing linear graphs to strengthen her grasp of core algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Molly focused on Mathematics Methods by practicing differentiation techniques and exploring their real-world applications using sample problems.

Recent Challenges

Ongoing challenges with homework completion, especially in maths, were evident across several students in both Year 6 and senior secondary levels—"needs to do the home works" recurred in multiple sessions, even after lessons on fractions and multiplication charts.

In a Year 11 Mathematics Methods session, incomplete review of past test papers meant some error patterns persisted into new topics.

One Year 7 student avoided writing out working for surface area problems, making it difficult to spot where confusion began.

"Forgot to convert units" was a stumbling block in geometry tasks; time was lost re-explaining basic conversions rather than deepening problem-solving skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Parkwood noticed a Year 11 student who previously needed step-by-step guidance with Chemistry was able to tackle sample assessment problems on intermolecular forces almost entirely on his own this week.

Another high schooler made a leap in Maths by independently recognising the connection between algebraic and graphical solutions—a skill he'd struggled to link before.

For a younger student, after weeks of guessing silent letters in spelling tasks, she's now pausing to check each word carefully and correct herself before moving on. Last session, she completed her worksheet without needing any reminders.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We had our 1st session tonight with David and it went really well. My son connected with him immediately even though he was nervous about tutoring and didn't really want to do it prior to tonight. After he had his session with David he said it was fun! I was pleasantly surprised to hear him say that and he asked that David come back next week instead of waiting a fortnight! We are very happy so far.

Things are going well with Amelia's tutoring and we are happy so far with the help Justin has given her. There was a decent improvement in her last maths assessment performance so that's a good sign!

We were all very impressed with Trent, Tamoe in particular. He was very patient and sought out a real connection with Tamoe. This really helped to get Tamoe to focus and listen. Tamoe is very keen to book in more time with Trent when school goes back.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parkwood Primary School.
