help them get to where they want without burdening them with the information that we understand well but the student may be struggling with. I believe tutors are just the extension of the student and that we should adapt to help them reach their potential. I think I have a knack for explaining notions and terms and am very good at pinpointing what…

I believe a maths tutor should be able to explain things clearly and stop the flow of teaching when necessary if a student needs to revise a difficult concept, as I believe it is better to know the concepts now rather than leave those areas to remain unclarified and which can and does affect students come a test or exam day. I believe that a tutor…

Brush over familiar concepts of study, and go into detail with concepts that are a little more difficult to understand. A tutor should always be patient as the student is already frustrated as they do not understand what they are learning to begin with, and i can say with confidence i am very patient. Most importantly i will boost my student's…

Also making the student see the beauty of what they are learning is important. Learning not just for the sake of a grade but learning to understand the beauty behind concepts . I consider the most important thing as a maths tutor is to teach your students to ask more questions, more often and trying to answer those questions themselves as if they are the teacher because by doing this they actually get used to thinking about various problems in a better way and come up with well thought questions and a better…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and help them become independent learners. It’s not just about helping with homework or test prep — it’s about teaching them how to think, ask questions, and solve problems on their own. A good tutor creates a safe and encouraging space where the student…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is make a safe and open environment. This is highly beneficial as the student engages more in the content as they feel comfortable. Participation and engagement are really beneficial to grasp on key contents covered in the lesson. My strengths as a tutor are great communication,…

Inside ParwanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ray practised multiplication facts and tackled multi-step addition using written strategies.

In Year 9, Aisha worked on simplifying surds and indices, then applied binomial expansion techniques to algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily explored matrix arithmetic—addition, subtraction, and multiplication—solving related word problems with real-world context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, Lyla had not completed her assigned maths homework, which left gaps when tackling revision tests on previously covered topics—her understanding slipped on session 2 material even though she recalled session 1 content.

In VCE Biology, Ariel hesitated to answer follow-up questions and struggled to explain his reasoning; as one tutor noted, "he needs to work on his confidence in explaining his thought process."

For a Year 8 student, relying on mental calculations in algebra led to skipped steps that made it hard for anyone else (including teachers) to follow the logic.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Parwan noticed that a Year 10 student who'd fallen behind during remote learning is now catching up, especially after starting to ask for help mid-problem instead of just guessing—something he never did before.

Another high schooler recently improved her quiz score from 8/14 to 12/17, and finished faster this time, showing she's not only grasping the material but becoming more willing to try questions even when unsure.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has begun saying her working out aloud and writing every step for tricky addition problems; previously, she'd freeze up and stay quiet if she got stuck.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lederderg Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bacchus Marsh Grammar - Maddingley Campus.
