Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

For me, I personally consider the ability of independent thinking is what a tutor really needs to teach his students across all the subjects, it is not only about memorizing the standardized formulas of problem-solving but also understanding the hidden logic of the methods. I believe the most important thing I should've done to my students is to…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Make them feel comfortable with you so they interact with you during the class as high interactive classes makes the subject more interesting and students tend to start liking the subject as well thereby spending more time with the subject. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. A lot of students actually understand more than they think, but they might be anxious, unsure, or afraid of making mistakes. So I see my role as creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. Another…

Rana Dawoud, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
