In my mind, not only a tutor provides knowledge for a student but also brings out their best characteristics. During the teaching procedures, a tutor can help student to learn better the subject, be fond of it, and through that teaches them social skills or practical application. Through my past experience as a teaching assistant, I develop my…

I strive to foster a safe and encouraging environment where curiosity flourishes, even when the going gets tough. This way, students feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and turning challenges into opportunities for growth. I excel at…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

I will give honest feedback and explain concepts in different ways to ensure that students understand not only where to improve but also how to improve. I think effective learning comes from mastering the fundamentals before moving onto the details. Learning is about stretching the boundary one percent again-and-again over time. This ensures…

As a student, I learn may things from tutors like how to teach students so that they can understand easily. So as a tutor, we have too teach the students in a simple way such that they can easily understand the concepts and they can apply that in real life. A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

The most pivotal thing is support. A teacher is essentially a mentor, and mentors are supposed to provide encouragement to the students and make the students fall in love with the subjects. A teacher should assess the performance of the students on a regular basis to ensure the goals of the students are being met. This involves testing them…

While helping the student achieve the scores they aim for is the top priority of all students, a tutor should also help the student find a subject enjoyable, spreading on the passion that they have for the subject onto whoever they teach. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. Once a student tells themselves that 'they can do it', there are innumerable…

Rana Dawoud, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
