To recognise that no two students are the same and that a process like learning needs to be personalised so that the best results are achieved. This personalisation also means that its much more likely for the student to open up and fully engage in the process of assisted learning as they can feel that the session is catered just towards their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to light the curiousity spark in the child's minds for any topics, and with persistance mentorship guide children to develop critical thinking abilities in maths and various related disciplines. I have a passion for teaching and I am patience with it. I am also hard working and have got the…

Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

As a tutor, I think it's important to be there for them. Learning loads of new concepts almost every second day can be overwhelming and with that, all students have their strengths and weaknesses. Thus as a tutor it would be a good measure to know their strengths and weaknesses and work with them through their weaknesses and add them to the list…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

As the old Navajo proverb goes, you satiate a person's hunger by giving them fish, they go hungry again in an hour, you teach them how to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. That's precisely what I'd like to do to my students. Allow them to explore the different possibilities, the world presents to them in order to hone their individuality and…

To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. We need to be able to relate to how the students feels to truly be able to guide them at their own pace of learning. Being impatient and giving up on students will only lower the motivation and self-confidence of the student,…

For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

Local Reviews

While it seemed to take a little while to pair with a tutor, the match was perfect. I couldn't be happier with the service. Definitely worth the conversation if you have a child with a specific need. We are already seeing improvements after only a few sessions.
Imelda Patton, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe Vale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tania reviewed the rules for indices and surds, practiced operations with both, and worked through questions involving addition, subtraction, and rationalising denominators.

Year 10 student Lucas focused on quadratic equations by factorising both monic and non-monic trinomials as well as solving quadratics using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled trigonometry applications including bearings and word problems requiring angles of elevation and depression.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's handwriting and arrangement of working out led to confusion during calculation—in factorisation tasks, this meant both the tutor and student lost time trying to decipher steps.

A Year 8 learner arrived unprepared, having forgotten textbooks and lacking familiarity with digital tools, which limited engagement in the session.

For a Year 10 algebra class, "just reading notes and doing practice questions" without tackling unfamiliar problems slowed progress on the unit circle topic.

In VCE Chemistry, skipping careful checks after calculations led to unnoticed errors; as a tutor observed: "methodical calculations were needed but not always followed through."

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale South tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who had struggled with factorisation; this time, he was able to construct several examples independently and tackle key homework steps that were previously out of reach.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student began deriving equations correctly for the first time—something she'd hesitated over before—and even worked through problems involving limits and derivatives with much less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to quietly muddle through reading now reads fluently and enunciates well, only occasionally needing encouragement to project his voice.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Dorcas was brilliant. Proactive, organised with a genuine interest in Yasmin's learning. Dorcas went over and above what was required of her and for that I am very grateful. Your company has always been professional and understanding also, no complaints there whatsoever. Thank you for following up with us and perhaps another time in the future we may need your services, I wouldn't go anywhere else to find a tutor.

Thanks for your e-mail follow up! All is going well thank you with Serenity-Mae's tutorials. It has been a positive experience for her which is great!

Ryan has been great. Jordon is already understanding more of the content which is fantastic. His words were "Ryan explains things much better than my teacher, so I understand it better."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Antonine College.
