I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them confidence. With confidence students can approach problems with an open mind and really try their best. My relatively young age gives me this ability to connect with students differently than older tutors. I had the chance to experience it from my (young) Physics teacher at High-School. To listen and make the learning experience enjoyable. The best way to learn is to do it in a way that does not stress you out, make it easy to understand. That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is improve the confidence of a student so that they feel competent and ready, which is a knock on effect from the clarity gained during tutoring sessions. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is influence a child's attitude towards learning. A lot of kids are very demoralised with regard to the idea of learning itself, let alone individual components of a subject. Often times you hear "I can't do this", when really we should be teaching kids to say "I can't do this YET". That simple…

From my years of soccer coaching experience, where I worked to improve the skills of a dozen different players of different levels, I learned that every student learns best in their own way and that is why tutoring is so important. In the classroom, everyone receives the same treatment and it is bound to be ineffective for many people. Thus, the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. To trust that the students do have the capabilities of learning and figuring out problems on their own and that they can grow. Giving the students space while still being there to push them in the right direction is the best way to help a student as we want the…

First, it is essential that a tutor provides support tailored to that student's needs, learning process, and interests. Second, a tutor must approach sessions with patience and understanding, while avoiding negativity and behavior that may discourage their student. Overall, I think creating an environment where a student feels seen and heard by…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

Show patience and be able to explain things in alternative ways. When a student is struggling to understand something, they can feel pressured or get frustrated or can feel depleted in the fact that they cannot understand a concept. So in my opinion, it is crucial to show patience and try to have the student understand by slowly going through…

Local Reviews

While it seemed to take a little while to pair with a tutor, the match was perfect. I couldn't be happier with the service. Definitely worth the conversation if you have a child with a specific need. We are already seeing improvements after only a few sessions.
Imelda Patton, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe Vale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tania reviewed the rules for indices and surds, practiced operations with both, and worked through questions involving addition, subtraction, and rationalising denominators.

Year 10 student Lucas focused on quadratic equations by factorising both monic and non-monic trinomials as well as solving quadratics using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled trigonometry applications including bearings and word problems requiring angles of elevation and depression.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's handwriting and arrangement of working out led to confusion during calculation—in factorisation tasks, this meant both the tutor and student lost time trying to decipher steps.

A Year 8 learner arrived unprepared, having forgotten textbooks and lacking familiarity with digital tools, which limited engagement in the session.

For a Year 10 algebra class, "just reading notes and doing practice questions" without tackling unfamiliar problems slowed progress on the unit circle topic.

In VCE Chemistry, skipping careful checks after calculations led to unnoticed errors; as a tutor observed: "methodical calculations were needed but not always followed through."

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale South tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who had struggled with factorisation; this time, he was able to construct several examples independently and tackle key homework steps that were previously out of reach.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student began deriving equations correctly for the first time—something she'd hesitated over before—and even worked through problems involving limits and derivatives with much less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to quietly muddle through reading now reads fluently and enunciates well, only occasionally needing encouragement to project his voice.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Rishi has given Juliette 2 tutorials. So far so good. He quickly established a good rapport with Juliette and found where her strengths and weaknesses were.  She had a maths exam today and she said there was only one question that was challenging.

I loved my experience as a tutor! Being a tutor at Ezy Math taught me priceless communication and interpersonal skills. It was a very rewarding experience to see my students learn and improve on their studies over the year, and Ezy Math always gave me the teaching support whenever I needed it. The hours were flexible and easy to schedule in around my other commitments.

I would like to say that James is an excellent tutor. Liam really enjoyed having James as his tutor and I would recommend James to any body interested in a Maths or English tutor. I think that James has done such an excellent job that Liam is now in advance of his class mates and has developed the skills to progress without a tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Antonine College.
