Firstly, a tutor can give guiding questions instead of displaying the answers straightaway. This way, the students can be prompted to think of a way to get to the solution. Secondly, I believe a tutor should build the foundation first before going deeper into the subject. I am a patient person. I would give time for the students to digest the…

I believe that a tutor should make the subject easy for the students to understand as each students learn in different ways. If a tutor is able to identify them and be able to make the student understand the subject then it is the best thing a tutor can do to help a student thrive. I think my strengths as a tutor would be that I believe that any…

The most important thing that any tutor can do for a student is to be a good listener. Knowing a student's expectations is really important in planning effective tutoring techniques. Only when we understand the requirements of the student and the hurdles that he or she face, will we be able to suggest solutions and work towards them. My biggest…

Being a tutor, one can do a lot of things for a student apart from teaching. A tutor has the responsibility of mentoring the students in career and general life. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student to enjoy learning, and impart a good studying method. After all, even the best tutor cannot help an unmotivated student, and a lack of self-motivation is the biggest obstacle that many underperforming students fail to overcome. I am good at following the student's pace.…

Personally, I think striking a balance between fostering a comfortable student-tutor relationship and challenging the student is important. Creating a genuine relationship helps the student open up to the tutor and be honest on what are the topics he/she is having a hard time understanding. On the other hand, challenging the students will help…

Important things a tutor can do for a student can be as subtle as providing the basic habits of Learning and self progression for the student. As a tutor, I believe it's essential to do more than just give answers to students. A tutor can be like a mentor, guiding students to think through problems on their own. Inside PaynehamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Isabel focused on algebraic expressions and patterns, then applied knowledge to solve linear equations and worked through problems involving area and perimeter of circles.

In Year 9, Em tackled trigonometry by using the sine and cosine rules for non-right angled triangles, while also revising similar triangles with geometric proofs.

For Year 10, Ana spent time expanding and factorising quadratics—using sum and product methods—and moved on to graph transformations including scaling and translating parabolas.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student often became "tangled in his thoughts" and struggled to write down working for algebra or worded problems; as a tutor noted, "he misreads the questions a lot of the time—need to work on slowly tackling the question."

In Year 10, another student's folio draft needed significant reformatting before submission, showing difficulties converting informal work into formal academic writing.

A senior student expressed feeling overwhelmed by test revision and was "unsure of exactly which units the test was going to be on," leading to anxiety and missed key theory during assessment.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Payneham recently noticed a big change in one Year 10 student who, after struggling with algebraic fractions last term, used a new three-step revision strategy and scored 80% on her latest test.

Another high schooler came to sessions with her own list of tricky questions—she not only worked through all of them but even decided to make a detailed notes sheet for extra practice before assessments.

Meanwhile, one younger student who used to rush through mental maths is now pausing to write out his working and can clearly explain how he solves mixed fraction problems.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am confident that Mandeep's approach is just what Hugo and Havier need to lift their confidence and capabilities to be the best they can be.

We really appreciated Arman‘s efforts and enthusiasm even when Aby was playing up. He is a wonderful teacher!

She is one of the finest tutors I have seen. Her consistency and persistent attitude towards the children growth makes her exceptional. Because of her, my niece developed confidence in all phases of education.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
