The most important thing a tutor can do is to cause a positive change in their students, whether it be an improvement in their grades, or a development in their learning skills. For a tutor's knowledge to successfully translate into a student and cause them to grow is the best thing a tutor can do. Patience, communication skills, problem solving,…

I had a tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. The demeanor of my tutor relived the stress of studying and gave me the confidence to attempt difficult problems that I would have given up on. Students at any year level will often feel…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and adapt lessons to suit their individual needs. It's not just about helping them understand the content, but also encouraging a positive attitude towards learning and helping them develop effective study habits…

Being accepting of any & all questions in a friendly and non-judgmental manner, so as to make sure the student feels comfortable asking such questions, because otherwise it would defeat the purpose of being tutored. I also think that it's vital for the tutor to give their students the best chance at being able to succeed with their own ability…

Explain it several times if you have to. Let them have a go themselves. They need to be able to understand it not just memorise the work so they can do it on their own when you are not there. Patience. Listening to students to see where that it is they have trouble understanding. Trying to explain the situation in different ways by giving other…

Build their confidence in their weak areas - I will want to see all my students feel they can overcome challenges and difficulty in their work through my help and support. I want my students to be inspired as I have been inspired by my teachers in the past, including when times were tough - to never give up on a student is essential. Also…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be a great role-model. It is not only about teaching the content, but most importantly being a positive influence. Patience and kindness. There is no learning without failure, and as an educator, the best thing you can do is to give your students an emotionally safe environment to fail in. Once, I heard a wise thing on the internet, "You should demand more from yourself, not from anyone else, or anything." Ever since, I find myself sticking to this thing to push those I am tutoring. Also, tutoring facilitates individualized attention, through which we as a tutor can provide more guidance, and support to get most out of the…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, but should guide the student to reaching that solution and ensure that they are able to understand the necessary steps. They should also be able to change the way they teach according to the needs of their students, as not everyone learns the same way. A tutor should be…

Inside PeakhurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Raeed worked on understanding negative numbers and using number lines for addition and subtraction.

Year 9 student Mia focused on applying the cosine and sine rules in trigonometry, along with targeted help for an upcoming assignment.

For Year 10, Ethan explored exponential and logarithmic functions as well as analysing features of parabolas, using graphing to support his understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often left math working scattered across the page, making it hard to spot and correct calculation slips—"better formatting of math work can also be worked on," a tutor noted after an indices lesson.

For a Year 11 class, time management issues appeared during trigonometry problem sets: slower speed with multistep questions led to unfinished sections.

In Year 3, one student hesitated to attempt subtraction word problems, held back by uncertainty about which information was needed from the text; this avoidance meant guessing replaced careful strategy.

In each case, these habits delayed progress and sapped confidence in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Peakhurst recently saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over algebraic expansion to working through complex equations independently by the end of the lesson, after initially struggling with similar problems.

In another high school session, a student who previously kept quiet began openly asking for explanations and now even requests specific topics to revisit, jotting down examples on her own initiative.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student started using the column method for addition—where before he forgot to carry numbers—and successfully completed sums with larger numbers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penshurst Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Peakhurst Public School.
