Providing PERSONALISED guidance, support and encouragement for students that many are unable to experience in larger classroom environments at school/ are too scared to ask for due to being shy or unsure about their skill level. A student knowing that they have another educational support system to rely on contributes a significant amount to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show genuine care for the student's learning. Additionally, having a passion for teaching is vital, because with no passion and care, the tutoring interactions with the student are inauthentic. My greatest strength as a tutor is being able to change the way I explain a concept so…

Provide support both academically and mentally. This can be done through practicing a topic of a subject, and also helping schedule their weeks, so they know they will still have social/leisure time, and maximize their grades and themselves. I am incredibly confident and happy to also learn new things. For example, if a student comes to me and…

A tutors responsibility isn't to provide answers, but to guide students to find their way of learning and to provide alternative approaches when tackling problem scenarios or questions. To be a successful tutor is to develop students mindsets and enable them to eventually trust in their instinct and decide for themselves the best way to go about a…

Hayley has responded very positively to having a tutor. Madelaine is the perfect personality, so suited to what Hayley needs. She is also a mentor for Hayley so I’m very relieved and happy we have Madelaine to help push Hayley through this year.

Inside Pearl BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel practised identifying and comparing fractions with the same denominator and worked on recognising odd versus even numbers using visual group activities.

In Year 8, Grace focused on multiplying fractions by integers as well as converting between improper fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals to strengthen her fraction fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava tackled rearranging formulae to change the subject of equations and substituted values into algebraic expressions for homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided showing full working in algebraic rearrangement tasks—"she jumped straight to answers, missing sign changes," as one tutor noted, which made it difficult to spot and fix recurring errors.

In Year 10 trigonometry, forgetting to bring her formula sheet meant time was lost searching for relationships between sides and angles instead of applying them.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner practicing mental addition would sometimes skip writing interim steps, leading to confusion when crossing tens or hundreds. This led to frustration when reviewing corrections because the process behind each answer wasn't visible on the page.

Recent Achievements

One Pearl Beach tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to guess on trig questions now confidently sets up SOHCAHTOA problems and explains which sides match each ratio, showing real independence compared to earlier sessions.

In Year 11, a student who previously got stuck rearranging formulas for physics has started identifying where values belong without prompting—last week, she solved an entire set of homework questions solo.

A younger primary student who always counted on her fingers surprised her tutor by tackling larger additions independently using the "rainbow" method and only checked with her fingers once.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks Gene, so far, Jamie's response has been very good.  He has had 2 lessons to date, as last week was cancelled at our request (he was away on camp). Jamie has responded very well to Eshan, who's approach is unassuming, gentle, but persuasive and constructive.  Jamie actually looks forward to spending time with Eshan to teach him his Maths strategies. We look forward to seeing Eshan again next week. Thanks also for the newsletter.  I have to say that I think your supportive written material is very useful!

All is great with Nathan. He's a lovely man and April has her block testing for maths tomorrow and she's confident- a good sign. April will now have a couple of weeks break due to holidays but Nathan will certainly be coming back. April quietly winges  about the homework Nathan sets for her but we don't interfere and are glad that Nathan makes sure its completed as April's attitude to maths was pretty bad.

Anne is loving tutoring and James is doing an amazing job so yes we are very happy and wish to continue!
