The most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding their weak areas. This helps them to adjust teaching materials and techniques to best meet the students' needs. This may range from using more techniques such as mnemonics (my personal favourite) as well as emphasising certain subject areas over others. My strengths as a tutor…

I consider one the most important things is to be really attentive towards the students needs and questions. The last thing you'd want is to have a tutor who doesn't listen or play close attention, and consequently struggle to explain the concepts in an effective way for the student to understand. You need to be patient and attend to the needs of…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to provide personalised support, build confidence, and encourage genuine understanding rather than rote learning. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My strengths include strong subject knowledge, clear…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is to create a safe, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Beyond that, it’s essential to tailor explanations to match the student’s learning pace and style, helping them not just learn but understand deeply. Finally, fostering a…

I think first and foremost is the support. This support comes in giving students help or advice when they ask for it, listening to what they have to say and especially in helping them achieve their goals. But this support also comes in the form of a tutor recognising when something isn't working, or when a student should try to do something on…

I believe the most important things in which a tutor can do for a student is to not only pass on their knowledge but to act as a positive influence for them to like the subject more or take more interest in studying particular subjects (so that they enjoy learning). I believe that my strengths as a tutor are that I genuinely enjoy teaching…

The most important thing a tutor can do isn’t to increase grades, it should be increasing a students curiosity and enjoyment for solving problems. This should be achieved by expanding the horizons of their mental frameworks and understanding. My strengths as a tutor are my ability to increase a student's understanding beyond what is needed for…

Clearly, it is being a strong and unwavering support as well as a teammate who helps a student gain confidence and achieve the goals. As a tutor, I am very patient with students. I help them gain confidence by communicating, supporting, and always emphasizing what they do well (good answers, reasoning...). I have a strong ability to adapt to be…

A tutor should assist the student in establishing confidence in a subject, by building independ thinking and a well rounded understanding of topics. This being said, it is not realistic to expect every student to achieve a high band 6, the progress that is made from the beginning of their learning process to the end is what counts the most, so…

Teach the student how to approach new content, instead of just teaching them the content that they need to learn at that moment (of course, doing this as well is also beneficial). The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is connect with them and help them learn how to do the concepts. I believe the role of the tutor is the prepare the student for assessments and future content, as having a solid base is very important, specifically in maths where future content is built upon what is previously taught. For students to feel more comfortable stepping into an exam comes from familiarising them with what to expect and how to…

1) listen to the student and the parent. students should be the ones doing the most talking and asking questions. Tutors job is to listen to the student and give them the help they need 2) help the student gain confidence in maths but also in study in general. One of the important things a math tutor can do for students is constantly testing them with the knowledge they have already absorbed in the past. Questions need to be changed, but concepts need to be practiced repetitively. The other important thing tutor can do to help students is organizing notes. Local Reviews

Our daughter has been matched with a tutor who matches her personality very well. We are hoping that this will encourage her and give her the confidence in her Maths class when school starts this year as well as her other classes as her confidence grows. After getting an E on her report card at the end of 2017 for Maths, hopefully the only way is up!

Inside Pennant HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Rose worked on identifying the numerator and denominator in fractions representing shaded areas, as well as using division to find fractions of whole numbers.

Year 9 student Kate focused on rearranging linear equations into general form and finding the length of a line segment given coordinates, also briefly reviewing indices.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Rosie practised solving trigonometric problems involving sine, cosine, and tangent ratios—including angle of elevation—and started learning how to convert degrees to minutes and seconds.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student often answered maths questions without fully reading them, which led to frequent mistakes—"if he believes he understands what a question is asking he will answer it without reading the question fully." This pattern caused avoidable errors, even on familiar content.

In senior years, another student forgot to bring homework multiple times and struggled with organizing materials for both algebra and finance tasks; this meant missing out on targeted feedback before assessments.

Meanwhile, in Year 10 algebra, messy written work—particularly skipping steps when rearranging equations—increased confusion when reviewing solutions later.

In each case, progress was slowed as time was spent re-explaining or retracing steps instead of moving forward confidently.

Recent Achievements

One Pennant Hills tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Michaela, set out her trigonometry working much more neatly than before, which helped her independently spot and fix small errors in cosine rule problems.

In Year 9, Kate has started recalling and applying surd laws from previous lessons without prompting—she even managed several new questions using these rules on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student, Shehzad, who used to get distracted easily and wait for reminders, is now catching himself after drifting off and returning to his maths tasks with minimal prompting; last week he explained place value concepts up to five digits almost flawlessly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Primary School.
