Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

The most important thing that a tutor must do is form a genuine connection with the student based on trust and integrity. This can be achieved through humour, motivation and sharing likes/dislikes. This allows for long-term teaching because of a comfortable environment allowing the student to perform to the best of their ability. My questioning…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and make learning fun. It's all about helping students believe in themselves, giving them the tools to succeed, and keeping things engaging. I'm good at breaking down complex stuff into easy-to-understand pieces. I'm also patient and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them improve as much as they can in a given subject. I feel confident in a leadership and teaching role due to my previous experience leading primary and high school aged kids at my church. I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

I think a teacher should understand the student and try to explain in such a way in which he can not only understand the concept but also enjoy it. The class should be competitive but also it should be encouraging. A teacher should act as a mentor, facilitator and a friend. Those are the most important thing a teacher should be and it will…

Personally, I believe that tutors play the most crucial role in facilitating a nurturing and interactive learning space, catering their teachings to the student's individual requirements, and offering personalized help, guidance and feedback too. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

Inside PenshurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aaliyah focused on simplifying like terms in algebra and practiced applying these skills through targeted exercises.

Year 9 student Jessica worked through worded probability questions, such as drawing colored discs from a bag, and solved equations involving negative numbers and unknown pronumerals.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophie revised Pythagoras' theorem by tackling test-style problems and also created an essay template for English to support her writing skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student's exam performance was affected by time management issues; as observed, "she ran out of time and left several questions unfinished," leading to unnecessary loss of marks despite knowing the material.

For a Year 8 student, dependency on tutor prompts was evident—she often waited for hints before attempting questions, slowing independent problem-solving.

A Year 4 learner struggled to lay out her thinking clearly on paper; when asked to "write everything she thinks of," she found it difficult to track her working, causing confusion during multi-step BODMAS tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Penshurst tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to leave answers unsimplified now independently checks and simplifies her solutions without prompting—a big shift from relying on hints in past sessions.

Another high school student recently recognised every mistake in her maths test, then confidently corrected them herself and completed the rest of the questions accurately, showing new self-awareness and resilience.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who would hesitate with mental calculations is now eager to attempt challenging multiplication problems out loud and even asks for tougher ones when she finishes early.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penshurst Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Declan's Catholic Primary School.
