The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to connect with them on a deeper level, going beyond just tutoring. Establishing a strong rapport and understanding the student's individual needs and challenges allows for a more personalized and effective learning experience. By building this connection, a tutor can become a mentor,…

I believe the ability to catalyse inner motivation is the greatest thing a tutor can do for their student. From my experience, I performed the best in subjects where my teachers were able to open my eyes to the interesting and cool aspects, as well as their application in real life. When a student understands not only the "WHAT" of the content,…

A tutor must understand that each and every kid is different, and if a tutor is teaching him/her something, in which the kid is not so good, don't make him/her realize that he/she is slow to understand that concept. A Tutor should always stay calm & composed with their students, and should provide them friendly and stressless study-environment. As…

I think one of the most important aspects is to be patient with the student. Its important to understand that each student is different, and create an environment that is comfortable for them to ask questions without feeling belittled or shunned. It takes great patience to achieve this; its important to go over aspects multiple times if needed,…

Ensuring they do not feel overwhelmed when teaching, it is very important to understand the person you are tutoring to allow for effective teaching without rushing or over complicating an area. You need to be able to go at a pace they understand, and can thus project properly what they have learnt. This will ensure optimal knowledge gets retained…

I believe that taking into consideration the students' learning styles and strengths, as well as giving them a thorough explanation of topics, will allow them to achieve excellent results. The main advantage of tutoring compared to other ways of learning (textbooks, videos) is that tutoring is more individualised and changes from student to…

An exemplary tutor or teacher is the one who does not just teach for the sake of doing the work but he should try to discover the problems and issues that his students are facing and try to be adaptive to new ways that may cater the queries of students. Also he should be friendly and welcoming to criticisms from his students, which is a driving…

Setting Higher Expectations Push students to achieve higher standards and they will eventually score good grades and along the way, offer lots of praise. Be loving, kind, fun and motivating. Most of the times our minds function best when they feel at ease. Under stress, they go blank. A teacher should keep putting its students in both the kinds of situations so that at the exam day(D-day) student should not go blank. I try to understand how the student can possibly grasp what I am trying to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a mentor. While not only teaching them what they have be taught, but also being someone that they look up to several things and someone that they strive to learn from. Very easy to get started. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Quick service with the actual tutor calling almost the next day to sort out when available. Big improvement in my Year 9 child's math studies. It has really helped her to understand Maths; with her knowledge being quite basic to start with. Was failing and within 3 months got her first pass in a major math test.

Inside Point CookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel focused on solving linear equations and modelling real-world scenarios with them, along with annuity and interest calculations in financial mathematics.

In Year 11, Emily worked through Math Methods Unit 1 and 2, tackling polynomials, functions, and the application of quadratic equations using chapter-based exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Josh practiced Further Maths matrices modules—transposing matrices and interpreting networks—and reviewed past exam papers to strengthen problem-solving speed and accuracy under timed conditions.

Recent Challenges

Several students in both primary and secondary years relied heavily on calculators or online modules instead of practicing key maths operations by hand, especially with algebra and negative numbers.

For example, one Year 8 student was encouraged to "do more pen and paper practice rather than relying on Math Pathway modules" after missing steps in factorization exercises.

In VCE Maths Methods, another student's messy working made it hard to spot errors before tests—"a dedicated workbook to write the steps in detail" was suggested for clarity. This sometimes led to extra time spent retracing unclear calculations during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Point Cook tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of mixing up steps, is now carefully listing every stage of advanced algebra factorisation before checking answers—he'd previously skipped straight to solutions and made small errors.

A Year 12 student has started timing herself on statistics extended-response questions; she used to get stuck for ages but now completes each in under fifteen minutes, which is a real change in her exam readiness.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at tricky spellings now points out when she's unsure and asks for help spelling new words aloud during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Point Cook Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lumen Christi School.
