For me personally a tutor is like a role model. They can be a big source of inspiration. Guiding a student to easily complete their studying and making it enjoyable. I am very understanding and like to tutor each student with much patience. I like to make the students feel that I am a student too and we are learning together. Doing this makes me…

In terms of whats most important in tutoring, I believe fostering a deep understanding of the material is key. This goes beyond memorisation, aiming to build a solid foundation for future learning. Equally important is building the students confidence, creating an environment where they feel capable and motivated to tackle challenges. Providing…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student understand the syllabus of the subject and feel confident in answering any questions that can be in upcoming exams. I have finished my HSC only last year which allows me to understand the pressure students feel towards upcoming exams. This allows me to teach in a certain way that makes…

I believe tutors pass on a sense of confidence to their students as they develop their skills. It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them confidence that they can learn. This will give them confidence to try and be creative in finding ways to understand any complex topic they need to know. One of my strengths as a tutor is that I am creative in discussing complex topics. I can discuss the same topic in different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him the problem solving skills, and motivate him to apply his skills on any problem he faces. After gaining experience with several types of personalities, I am now a tutor that understands how the student thinks. I motivate the student to figure out the solutions himself in a fun…

Passion and time. Once a tutor have the passion to tutor a student, they will do everything it takes to excel the student. Time, because it's the time and effort that the tutor put in the sessions for the student to improve. Communication skills and Patience are one of the main strengths I have as a tutor. I am also a problem solver, this is also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand. Memorising content is useful, but without understanding, the brain soon discards it as unimportant. Understanding allows students to see the bigger picture and how concepts tie together. Memorising forces students into a box, where questions outside of what they’ve…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to be a reliable guide to the students. Every students has their own way of learning and pace of learning. I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

One of the most important things I consider a tutor can do is explain subject(s) and provide support in a way that is tailored to the individual student. I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I think a teacher should understand the student and try to explain in such a way in which he can not only understand the concept but also enjoy it. Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

Inside Potts HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Natalia worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and tackled past paper problem-solving questions for the OC maths test.

Year 8 student Ryan focused on rates and ratios, applying them to real-world scenarios, and also reviewed how interest rates work using step-by-step calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Lily practised converting decimals to mixed numbers as well as simplifying equivalent fractions, reinforcing these skills with targeted worksheets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 English, one student's essays were "missing key points in the conclusion," and time management issues showed up during exam writing.

In Year 6 maths, a habit of doing working out mentally instead of on paper led to repeated mistakes with fractions and perimeter; as noted, "he needs to write down his working out rather than doing them in his head."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with applying the correct formula when faced with multi-step problems, often guessing or choosing at random if unsure—this meant he missed opportunities to learn from feedback and solidify problem-solving strategies.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Potts Hill recently saw Joel, a Year 10 student, shift from writing run-on sentences to spotting and correcting them on his own—something he'd struggled with before.

Sriyan, also in high school, won his class speech competition after working hard on structure and argument; previously, he'd hesitated to present.

In primary years, Adriana surprised her tutor by quickly picking up how decimals work and now solves complex addition problems in her head without prompting.

At the end of her last session, she completed all her fractions homework accurately and explained each answer aloud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Regents Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birrong Girls High School.
