The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster confidence, inspire curiosity, and provide a supportive learning environment. A tutor should adapt their teaching to the student's individual needs, ensuring complex topics are broken down into understandable concepts. Encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence in learning and foster a genuine interest in the subject. I think a tutor doesn’t just help with academic skills, but they also create a safe and encouraging space where students feel heard, supported, and motivated to improve. By identifying a…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I was raised up in another country…

Be a good listener and open-minded to gain clarity on the student’s thoughts and feelings. This gives them an opportunity to elaborate on the topic. Empathy. I think tutor should listen to the student and understand their needs and challenges. Doing this will build a good rapport and ensure that your the student feels…

For me, the most important thing is to show them and teach them to understand the process of the subject itself. This mean that they need to understand and see why and how the method works the way it is and why we teach the lesson this way. Another important factor is the student itself enjoying the lesson and learning process. This, for me can be…

Fostering an environment of growth is key: tutors need to encourage the student to ask questions, set realistic standards and recognise failure as the opportunity to learn. Seeing these mindsets shift within students is extremely rewarding as a teacher. In my experience of tutoring, it is less about showing the student what you know and…

Tutors must prepare for teaching prior to the session. Briefly revising a topic that the tutor may have not covered in a couple of years will allow the tutor to spend more quality teaching time with the student. A tutor must also be responsive. If a student is contacting their tutor with a question, even if its outside of the specified teaching…

To really care for them - not just for the money but to really want to see them grow. Being understanding of students' learning experiences; whether it is confident about the topic or frustrated and disappointed when they don't yet "get it", the perspective helps me more likely able to keep a student's learning energy alive, thus more efficiently helping them. For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

Be able to establish rapport and trust. Being a good listen as a mentor is very important. A tutor student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. We need to appear as a instructor but a friendly advisor. The most important ability for anyone is how does an individual learn? This can be taught by a tutor and motivation provided by them. I…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Ensuring the student's questions are answered clearly and properly, even if it requires a lengthy process. It is important for the tutor be enthusiastic at all times without showing feelings of apathy, even when the student asks the same question many times. Inside PrahranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Ava focused on applying the Pythagorean Theorem to word problems and practiced unit conversions for measurement, including using conversion prefixes.

In Year 9, Nicholas worked through negative integers and reviewed fraction concepts, while also tackling algebraic skills like solving single-variable equations and simplifying expressions.

For Year 11, Ben prepared for an upcoming probability test by analyzing tree diagrams and completed exam revision covering parabolas and key syllabus topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes "guessed what to do next" in algebra instead of logically working through each step, which led to avoidable errors when negative numbers appeared.

In a senior session, forgetting to bring completed homework meant valuable time was spent reconstructing past work rather than tackling new challenges.

For a Year 10 trigonometry task, "relying too heavily on formulas" without understanding when or why to use them caused confusion on non-standard problems.

As one tutor noted, "skipping steps made mistakes with + and – harder to catch."

Neatness in written solutions often lagged behind verbal reasoning, especially during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Prahran tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally nail SOH CAH TOA, now manipulating trig equations independently after struggling to set them up on her own.

One high schooler earned full marks on a quiz—word problems included—when last term he hesitated with multi-step solutions and often skipped them altogether.

Another secondary student who used to quietly guess at answers has started speaking up about learning strategies, even offering feedback mid-session.

This week, a younger student completed her entire practice paper before the lesson and came prepared with specific questions she'd written down herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prahran High School.
