A tutor should provide clear explanations, encourage critical thinking, and foster a positive learning environment. I believe the most important aspect is taking the time to understand what students are struggling with and helping them enjoy the process of learning and seeking feedback, rather than fearing it. I tailor my lessons to align with each student's interests and enjoy teaching in an engaging and enjoyable manner. I believe this approach provides…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student is make themselves alaways available to help their student, whether it is a full lesson or just a quick question over the phone, just being a constant support to the student is of such high value. Another important thing a tutor can do, is alter their teaching for each student. Everyone…

For smaller children, it is important that education is intesresting, entertaining to them, so the motivation for studying, learning content comes naturally and from their own. For older children, it is more important for tutors to reach out and ask the students what they don't understand or are not clear about. Targeting weak areas and fixing the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is concentrate on their needs. The student already has teachers at school who teach the class broadly, irrespective of a particular student's strength or weaknesses. A tutor must listen to what the student struggles with, and assist them with that area. A tutor can also be the most encouraging…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

1. To not get in the way and yet the child will make the correct decisions at the time of tutoring and onwards after tutoring. Helping students build confidence is arguably the most important and beneficial thing a tutor can do. I firmly believe that confidence is the building block of success, and that, by bringing it out of a student, a tutor can unlock the student's full potential, and empower them to expand their skills and capabilities. Volunteering as an instructor…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are inspire and impart. I think it's really important for a tutor to offer intrinsic motivation to a student. I find that alot of students are easily academically discouraged. Inside PyrmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Poppy focused on dividing numbers using long division and began working with dividing decimals.

In Year 9, Tia tackled ratios and rates, practising real-world problem sets and reinforcing key methods for unit conversions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through differentiation using the product rule and explored more challenging trigonometric function questions to deepen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12, a student who was fully capable with application questions lost marks under exam pressure—timed conditions disrupted her usual accuracy and confidence ("under timed conditions, the pressure leads to a loss in marks").

For Year 10 algebra, skipping steps when forming equations hid small sign errors, which took extra time to find.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, forgotten multiplication facts slowed down long division; revision focused only on recent topics meant earlier concepts slipped from memory.

In English (Year 9), arguments lacked focus when writing essays, leaving responses less convincing than intended.

Recent Achievements

A Pyrmont tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with worded ratio problems now tackling them independently, even adapting quickly when questions were rephrased—a big shift from needing step-by-step prompts.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who had been hesitant to ask questions started speaking up whenever unsure and volunteered to solve practice sums on the whiteboard without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler worked through all her mensuration formula problems within the set time for the first time after having trouble finishing before; she finished strong by checking her answers herself and correcting two small errors without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ultimo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay Campus.
