A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

I believe that a tutors role extends beyond just teaching; they are trusted. Receiving tutoring for scholarship subjects for myself in high school, what was my impactful was tutors providing a safe space for open discussion and drawing insights from their learning journeys. As a result, I felt a genuine connection which transformed my tutors from…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share their passion for learning, helping them view education as an exciting adventure rather than just another task. I try to make learning feel like a journey full of discoveries. For example, when my little sister struggles with a tough math problem, I connect it to her…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to offer unwavering support and create a safe, non-judgmental space for learning. A great tutor motivates, encourages, and believes in their student — especially when the student struggles to believe in themselves. Helping them build confidence, celebrating small wins, and fostering a positive…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient and slowly explaining concepts in an easier way in order to be able to fully explain concepts that can be easily understood. The strengths as a tutor are my social skills, my patience, and my ability to break down concepts and explain it in an easier way. This means that I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is offer them hope through creating a realistic pathway to help the student gain their desired mark in their subject. This will motivate the student as they realise their goals are in fact achievable. My strengths are my empathy, kindness, dedication and reliability. It is essential that the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for their students is to build a relationship. This foundation will help students to have a trust in their tutor and this will encourage them to share their problems. If the tutor understands the exact problem the student is struggling with, then they can alter their teaching techniques according to…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. A tutor helps the student understand the subject matter in detail and at ease. He/she breaks the complex problem which require analytical skills to simpler arithmetic problems a student can work on. This in turn builds confidence in the student who in turn can easily interpret exam-setting questions as well as real life logic with ease. I like to…

I believe in teaching the students skills more than information. The saying goes, if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime, which is very close to my heart. Being understanding of the student's needs is the duty of the tutor and do your best to improve the student's understanding of school subjects. Teaching engagingly and interestingly: the student should not feel like it is just another class at school, but provide an opportunity for him/her to engage and deliver content in a manner which piques his/her interest. 2. Kate, Ramsgate

Inside Ramsgate BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max focused on spelling strategies for tricky words and used clapping and syllable breakdown to improve accuracy, while also practicing recount writing about recent events.

Year 8 student Jeyda worked through algebraic expressions—specifically expanding, simplifying, and cross-multiplying fractions—and reviewed key scenes from Romeo and Juliet using TEEL paragraph structure.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ayla practiced solving simultaneous equations and tackled past HSC exam questions to strengthen her confidence with worded problems under timed conditions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student repeatedly arrived without having reviewed the week's algebra content, leading to time spent re-covering basics instead of building new skills; as a tutor noted, "I end up having to spend the next week covering what I went through the previous week."

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student tackling HSC exam-style questions sometimes lost track midway and hesitated to apply familiar strategies independently—especially under time pressure.

In Year 4 English, unfinished homework and misplacing workbooks meant spelling practice was inconsistent. The result: visible frustration when progress stalled or mistakes persisted.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ramsgate Beach noticed one high school student, Jeyda, is now breaking down tricky exam word problems on her own instead of getting stuck on confusing language—something that used to slow her down.

Another secondary student recently tackled a TEEL paragraph for English homework and, unlike before when his answers were short and rushed, he wrote a well-structured response even under time pressure.

In Year 3, Max finished his spelling list with 100% accuracy after struggling with certain digraphs last term; he now remembers patterns like "-ai" and "-ay" without reminders.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Grace is really enjoying the sessions with James and the support has given her confidence. He is an excellent tutor.

Ajok is a lovely person who my daughter has taken to very well in the first two lessons we have had.  Ajok was unable to see us last week due to her own study commitments, but I'm hopeful this tutoring will be just the help my daughter needs.

We are very Happy with our tutor Isabelle and communicate directly with her about our and her availability. We have only one session left this year as Isabelle and /or India will be unavailable after that. We hope Isabelle can continue to coach India from the second week of term 1 2015 when India starts high school

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sans Souci Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ramsgate Public School.
