As a tutor, I believe the core priority is to support the student’s learning in the most effective and personalised way possible. Building a student’s confidence is just as important as helping them achieve higher marks, as the two often go hand in hand. Having experienced the benefits of tutoring myself in high school, I understand firsthand…

Take an interest in them. Make sure they know that you care about them, their success and their learning. I think that I am able to keep the classes relaxed and get the students comfortable with me as a tutor. I want them to feel that they are my friend so that they can express their concerns and doubts. I think that I do that well. I make the…

The most important thing is to just be there for them, to understand their strengths and weaknesses and being able to help them where you can. It is also important to encourage your students as having that support can push them further than they think they can. I think my strengths are having the patience to help others as well as my communication…

A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

I believe a tutor needs empathy. The tutor needs to make a targeted effort to understand their student. A student's weaknesses, strengths, drive and thinking style all play an integral role in a student's learning process and thus should be taken into account when developing lessons. Individual needs must be considered to facilitate realistic and…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

The biggest thing would be to help students understand that ignorance is not failure. Just because they don't know something "basic", that does not mean they are worse than others, or are stupider, or are not going to succeed. It simply means they were not taught in a way that makes sense to them. This could be for a number of reasons, and not…

A tutor should not just be present to give the student all the answers. Its about building confidence and understanding the student’s way of thinking in order to help them grasp concepts and overcome their academic difficulties. Its about taking on a leadership and mentor role so that you can guide your student, and making them feel comfortable…

The tutor needs to care about the student's learning. They need to understand the way each student learns best and mould their pedagogy to fit the student. The tutor needs to be able to recognise consistency in errors so that they can make the student aware of where they are going wrong and can help fix it. The tutor also needs to be patient and…

A tutor needs to listen to a student, to understand what the best methods of learning will be, and needs to adapt their teaching to work for any student, rather than just forcing a student into a single mindset. I explain things very carefully, with multiple ways of looking at something, so I am quite flexible in trying to work with a student. I…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This means taking the time to understand each student's unique needs, learning style, and interests, and tailoring the tutoring approach accordingly. A good tutor should also be patient and compassionate,…

Inside Rankin ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 Julian revised faces, edges, and vertices of 3D shapes using diagrams, then tackled two-digit addition and subtraction before extending to questions with four- and five-digit numbers.

In Year 9, Amy practised similar triangles—applying SSS, SAS, and AAS criteria—and solved ratio problems with the help of online tools.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on financial mathematics by interpreting worded questions about compound interest and depreciation, as well as converting time periods within those calculations.

Recent Challenges

During recent lessons, several process-related challenges emerged across year levels.

In Year 11 Maths, "formal responses to HSC stuff [were] too shallow," so depth and planning in written answers are still developing; time management for exam-style tasks was also flagged, with one student not allocating enough review time before submitting work.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student showed difficulty keeping number placement organized when working with larger numbers—"he sometimes made the mistake of forgetting that he took away a place for a number"—causing confusion and errors mid-calculation.

In both cases, these habits led to marks lost on otherwise understood material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rankin Park noticed that a Year 11 student who used to skip steps in worded maths questions now writes out every step and checks his work, which has helped him interpret tricky problems much more independently.

In another session, a high schooler who previously struggled with compounding period conversions was able to quickly and accurately handle multi-step financial maths problems on his own, showing much greater confidence using the calculator for these tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who hesitated to name shapes is now confidently identifying both 2D and 3D shapes without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardiff Library, kuram—or at your child's school (with permission), like New Lambton Heights Infants School.
