Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Explaining why things are the way they are instead of…

I believe that a good tutor would empower and inspire the students to strive towards their dreams and goals and support them in the process. To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

A tutor can change a student's life in ways more than one. She can help them find their confidence. She can, also, help them believe in themselves and encourage them to ask questions they have been scared to ask in their classes. A tutor can help a student overcome their fears and help them improve. Apart from helping the students achieve their…

Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that a tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. Tutoring is only truly effective when the student is completely engaged with the tutor and I believe that this can only happen when the student believes that they are in an…

Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I believe that a tutor should always be ready to help pupils with their concerns. In order for students to do better under him, a tutor must not only assist students academically…

First and foremost a tutor needs to give them confidence, A tutor should show the students that even the hardest questions can be solved by practicing and hard working. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their goals,…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students see the significance and practicality of the concepts they are learning. Rather than just teaching for the sake of memorizing, a great tutor bridges the gap between theory and real world application, allowing students to appreciate the beauty of a subject. Because only when students…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Learning is inherently effortful, and having someone friendly to guide the process makes it more enjoyable and productive. Additionally, tutors need to…

Inside Red HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Jacob focused on differentiation from first principles and applying the power rule, then worked through rate of change problems with step-by-step examples.

Another Year 12, Mia, practised using the chain rule to differentiate trigonometric functions and reinforced her understanding of trig identities and the unit circle with targeted exercises.

For Grade 8, Emily completed exam revision by tackling two worksheets covering a mix of algebraic operations and worded questions where she had specific doubts, helping clarify challenging areas ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student found that "bad shortcutting pickups" in algebra led to preventable blunders, especially under nervousness.

In senior maths, another student lagged behind on assessments; sessions focused entirely on rebuilding a knowledge base rather than refining skills—catch-up became the new normal as missed deadlines piled up.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with division word problems and needed help unpacking complex questions into simpler steps for clarity.

One university-level student wasn't used to self-navigating fast-paced content, leading to confusion about what to revise first and falling further behind each week.

Recent Achievements

A Red Hill tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who'd been hesitant with calculus start confidently applying the chain rule to tricky trig functions, even choosing which integration method to use on her own for the first time.

In Year 9, one student—previously quiet and rarely asking questions—began actively seeking clarification during sessions, showing she now feels comfortable indicating when she needs help rather than staying silent.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 made real strides by remembering new arithmetic concepts from past lessons and applying them without reminders, successfully finishing all ten practice problems independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Compass Independent School.
