What I feel is imperative as a tutor, I should do is to integrate students skills into their school work so they can make them their strengths. I enjoy helping student see that, and I believe I am capable of bringing out people's confidence. Giving the students confidence and assurance in their work will greatly improve their grades. I like to…

Covering topics before or after it is done in school, understanding complex topics can be quite difficult, a repetition of the topic or the topic being taught from a different perspective or using different methods will enable the student to develop an extensive knowledge of the topic. Due to the fact that what is taught in school may not always…

I think it is important to be adaptable, each student and each age group will learn differently. Even moreso, I think it is vital that tutors are patient, listening to their students and trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible even when faced with a challenge. I think as a tutor and in general, I am very hard working, and will be …

Teaching study skills and learning strategies alongside subject content 3. Building genuine confidence by celebrating progress and helping students recognise their own growth 4. Fostering…

PDHPE Tutor Greenwich, NSW
A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

Having been tutored by several people over my high school career, I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for students are enabling them to reach their full potential. As well as providing them to with opportunities and equipment to succeed in learning, through encouraging them, guiding them to the answer rather than give it to them and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is support them in all aspects of their life, not just academia. By doing this, you build a strong yet professional relationship with the student, where there is mutual respect and trust. Following this, students are more inclined to listen, do homework and work hard. My strengths as a…

PDHPE Tutor Stanmore, NSW
In my opinion, building a student’s confidence and providing friendly assistance is the best any tutor can do for their students. As someone who has received tutoring in the past, I know how much of a difference these simple things can make to a nervous or hesitant student. I believe my strongest attributes as a tutor are that I am very patient,…

Set them on the right path. Helping them to understand concepts and develop skills (rather than just doing things for them) will mean that they can go on to use these skills themselves. This is very important for exam-taking. Communication. I ask for their input and check that they understand what I'm saying. I am patient and will explain a…

PDHPE Tutor Campsie, NSW
I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

PDHPE Tutor Yagoona, NSW
I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for students is to improve their confidence in their own abilities. Having confidence will equip them with the key tools to deal with fears and self-doubts, which are things that can significantly hinder the learning process. To do this, a tutor has to provide encouragements to students along…

Inside RhodesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ruby practised **fraction operations and strategies for working with decimals**, using visual models to build confidence.

In Year 11, Daniel explored **trigonometric identities** alongside exponential and logarithmic functions, focusing on manipulating equations and applying log laws.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah worked through **advanced integration techniques** including substitution and the use of first and second derivatives to solve calculus-based motion questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Advanced Maths often relied on rote memorisation for trig identities but struggled to recall them accurately during integration tasks—"he hesitated when asked to apply the ASTC rule," one tutor noted, which slowed progress.

In Year 9, algebraic working was sometimes messy and lacked structure, making it hard to spot calculation slips and review errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's times tables revision stayed only at the familiar level, missing out on harder combinations.

For English in Year 12, late essay drafts meant feedback couldn't be actioned before final submission.

Recent Achievements

One Rhodes tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to freeze on integration questions now working through u-substitution problems step by step without prompts.

In another session, a Year 8 student who had previously guessed at algebra is now confidently identifying unknowns and explaining her process aloud.

A primary school learner, after weeks of hesitation, has started breaking up tens and units independently when multiplying, rather than waiting for help.

Most notably, last week's high school session finished with a student choosing and justifying the best analysis techniques for his English essay draft on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wentworth Point High School.
