I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I am training to become a teacher and so I have a good understanding of how learning can occur, especially for students. I have been able to help students in the…

Helping the student with each and every situation, control the pressure situations on students, being friendly and open to them, Understand their thinking and implement their thoughts. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. For me, I found it the most helpful when a tutor was able to provide formulas or structures for solving problems, which allowed me to tackle whatever questions I was tasked me. As a student, I have a love of learning and an innate sense of…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

I have always had a knack for providing a new and creative approach to a challenging problem. I believe that even if a child is positive they do not understand a topic, that I will be able to find a way their brain can understand it. One of my revision methods throughout year 12 was to teach my friends and family my coursework to solidify my…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

Help him or her to find their own ways to study most efficiently. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to prepare them for later years in the subject they are working on and other subjects as well. With most tutors in the US, they only stay around if the student is having moderate to severe trouble (if the student is excelling, the parents don't usually want to pay for more sessions).…

Apart from seeing their grades improve, which is obviously important, the most rewarding part for me is getting students passionate about something—whether it’s the subject itself or the excitement of overcoming a challenge. When a student starts to see that they can conquer difficult concepts, it builds their confidence not just in academics…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. I tutor can do so much more than just help with studies and exams. A teacher is a person who is able to inspire his students. I believe that a teacher must be able to develop an interest in the heart of the student. So as a teacher our main motive should always be able to make the student motivated for studies. As I am a kind of people person who…

Annette Webb, Richmond

Inside RichmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sam worked on reviewing questions missed in Maths Space, with a focus on statistics and interpreting data sets.

For Year 8, Mia covered the foundations of algebra including expanding brackets and factoring, then practiced graphing parabolas using turning point form.

In Year 10, Liam reviewed motion concepts such as velocity and displacement through problem-solving exercises, and tackled chemistry mole calculations to strengthen quantitative analysis skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 exam preparation, one student's revision focused mainly on familiar question types, avoiding harder Units 1 and 2 calculation problems. "She got these wrong on the exam, so this will be our next focus."

In a Year 8 algebra session, work was often messy and steps were skipped—making it hard to spot where mistakes happened.

A primary student hesitated to show working in fraction problems out of fear of being wrong; as a tutor noted, "he needs more confidence to go with his gut instinct."

These patterns led to repeated errors and slowed progress in mastering new material.

Recent Achievements

One Richmond tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through questions now takes time to read each one carefully, catching details she previously missed.

In a senior session, another student who had struggled with algebra last term is now confidently recognising like terms and solving equations without prompting—last week, he finished all assigned problems independently for the first time.

A younger student also surprised her tutor by starting to ask clarifying questions during lessons rather than guessing quietly; this shift meant she solved several tricky fraction problems correctly on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Richmond Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School-Richmond Campus.
