Be accommodating and accepting of the fact that all students are not the same. Tutors need to equip themselves with multiple strategies, examples and methods to explain to all different kinds of students. I am very patient and resilient in everything I do, including teaching. I have taught students who are child like in their 8th grade up to…

I think a maths tutor has to be able to make the student want to learn, and make what they're learning interesting. A big part of this would be to get to know the student and cater to their individual needs and the unique way they learn. This also means maintaining a positive mindset and ensuring that the student knows that we are working together…

For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to help them discover self-motivation. By fostering a sense of intrinsic drive, students become more willing to delve into and excel in the subjects they love. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my eagerness to explore the unknown, whether it's the world, books, or unfamiliar…

A tutor should be able to inspire a student. By giving knowledge, a maths tutor should not just make a student achieve a higher grade. Instead, I believe that a tutor should inspire students, stimulate their brains, challenge them and also spark curiosity. This way, a student will have natural interest towards the subject and will be motivated to…

Well-prepared lesson plan before tuition would be my priority and i would try my best to engage students in my lesson. I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
