In my opinion, a maths tutor needs to really be a friend who is reliable and helpful for his/her students. A tutor should be able to help the students to deeply understand the content of the subject so they can perform better in class. I am a calm and friendly person and I believe that it will help a lot when I tutor other students. I also like to…

Be accommodating and accepting of the fact that all students are not the same. Tutors need to equip themselves with multiple strategies, examples and methods to explain to all different kinds of students. I am very patient and resilient in everything I do, including teaching. I have taught students who are child like in their 8th grade up to…

Being patient and flexible to be able to cater to student's strengths and weakness. By sharing information about what you have encountered, the student may feel relieved that he is not alone. Sharing experiences and lessons learned goes a long way toward building trust and support. It also helps the student build self-confidence. My biggest…

In my opinion, the most important thing, that a maths tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I was raised up in another country…

Tutors must prepare for teaching prior to the session. Briefly revising a topic that the tutor may have not covered in a couple of years will allow the tutor to spend more quality teaching time with the student. A tutor must also be responsive. If a student is contacting their tutor with a question, even if its outside of the specified teaching…

In my opinion, guiding the student to being able to help himself or herself is the most crucial aspect in teaching. In other words, teaching the student to learn things on their own is what makes teaching so powerful. Firstly I am patient with students to a certain degree. The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is building their confidence. As small as it may sound, this can be essential for the students' confidence, which will naturally encourage them to achieve better…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to help them discover self-motivation. A tutor can be a guide for a student. I believe that a student can learn from the experience of a maths tutor and in this process, he doesn't tend to make mistakes that a tutor made in the past. Other than that, A tutor can motivate students to achieve not only academic but life goals as well. I try to relate every problem whether it is of maths…

I believe the most important things is to help students truly understand a concept instead of just memorizing it. In that way, students' academic performance can be improved and their confidence can be built up. Then, a solid foundation can be laid for further study and more career paths is available in the future. 1. I do understand the concepts…

A tutor should be able to make the student understand more about what they're studying and not just being able to work on the exercise but also understanding the whole concept because if we know the concept well then formulas come easily. In addition, we have to know what method works well with the student since different people have different…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

Personally, the most important is to be within the student's grasp, by identifying their difficulties, by giving them clear explanations - starting with the easiest and then move on - to make sure their foundations are solid. Once the difficulties are identified, we can focus on more specific aspects and make progress faster. I am patient and I…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
