First and foremost would be making the students realize that every question they come up with is very important and they should not hold back until they have clarified their doubts. Implementing new methods to teach the relevant concepts until the student is confident that he/she had understood it well. Making students self-assured in…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. The teacher, I believe, should be a good friend and never intimidate the students, even if they lack the necessary skills to learn the subject quickly. Communication skills, level of patience,…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient, meaning a tutor should not rush the session along and cover another topic, if the student is not fully confident with what was already covered in the session. I believe this minimises stress for a student, as they are less likely to feel pressure to learn a topic they may find…

Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
