A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I like to address the doubts of students and solve them immediately. I also frequently ask them if they've got any further questions and I keep…

I see my role as a tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. I think its important to be patient and allow students to build their own understanding with my guidance. I also think that it is important to be a good role model for students. As a student myself, I…

A tutor must create a friendly bond with the student so they feel free to ask anything and clear all the concepts. It's a tutor's duty to make sure that all the students are on same page at the time of lecture, involving everyone is the key requirement. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and self trust, as this often leads to improved performance. I make lessons engaging by involving students in each step, encouraging questions and critical thinking, and emphasising both independent learning and problem solving. I also give students breaks when…

Tutors can do a lot for their students but the most important thing they can do is to share your own experience. By sharing what they have experienced it build trust and support and boost students self confidence and self esteem. Tutor make sure their students are independent and confident. I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

First of all tutor behaviour with students. If tutor are very strict students can not share their problem due to fear however tutor can not behave very friendly because sometimes student can rude with tutor if we are very friendly. Tutor should behave politely with them. Second is teaching style. Another one is practising and normal…

Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a tutor is…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

I should be able to make learning fun for the student and make the student feel more confident while dealing with the subject. I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
